can you drill out stock exhaust cans?

I read the loudest exhaust thread and want no part of that BUT I do want a little rumble from my 1000. Coming over from the world of chrome, I am glad NOT to rattle windows and set off car alarms with my DL but I would like to sound a little better next to my wifes screamin eagle. Heard two bros. pipes and was good but too loud following him for my taste. I searched this topic and got 1500 or so hits and read several pages and saw nothing about drilling stock cans.
thanks,

Somebody did this before and posted a review. I believe it was on a 650 though and he ended up not liking it and resealing the holes. I'll see if I can find it.
