Stop light for Givi top bag V46

I installed my Givi V46 top bag on my DL 650 yesterday and got everything set just right, but I can't seem to get the stop light to work on the hard bag. The light works when you go directly to the battery from any of the connections (from the bag and from the rack), but splicing into what looks like the appropriate wires into one of the two bulbs in the back light assembly doesn't seem to work. Am I selecting the wrong wires to splice into? Any ideas as to which are the correct wires (color and location) ?

To anyone thinking about one of these top bags from Givi, I can highly recommend one. It makes my commuting or errand-running so much better. If I have to go into a store I can now lock my helmet and jacket inside so my hands are free to shop with, rather than carrying them around as well. Not to mention it's a good looking addition to the bike also.

according to the wiring diagram the wires in the harness before the rear connector:

brake light wire should be the W/B (white with black stripe)
the Gr (green) should be the running light,
the B/W (black w/white) must be the common/ground,
the Lg (lite green) should be the right turn signal,
the B (black) should be the left turn signal,

I have not gone out to comfirm this so I may be incorrect in the translation for the colors, i.e W/B = white with black stripe.

You could get one of those test lights you can get from most auto parts stores that have an aligator clip on the end of a wire and a screwdriver looking handle with the light in it on the other end which has a sharp point on it to pierce the wire. You ground the tester to a bolt on the engine and poke the wire in question and apply the brakes to see if it is the right one.
Great item for the tool box anyway.

Here are some links. First one is the use of a test light and the second is of the v-stroms wire diagram:

azsidewalker,

Thanks for the info. I'll check my wiring Wednesday. It helps to know where to start! Also, I have used someone tester in the past but don't have one of my own. A very good suggestion and a good reason to add this useful tool to my toolbox.

Thanks again,

Bob

Please let us know how to get wired...

I ordered the V46 topcase about 2 months ago for my '04 DL1000 - it arrived quickly (along with the stoplight assembly and backrest), but I've been waiting for the E528 mounting hardware ever since. It's on back order, and should arrive within the next few weeks. Slow boat from Italy, I guess.

Please let us know how you get the lights to work, because I'm going to be going through the same installation process soon. I'll assume that the wiring harness for the 650 and the 1000 are the same.

FYI, I also have the E41 panniers with the silver panels to match, and I'm very happy with them.

Last week, I installed a Cee Bailey 23.5" comfort windscreen with the light grey tint. I keep it at the lowest setting, and it's been great. I'm 6' 2", with a 34" inseam, so most of my height is in the torso.

I have the brake light kit for my Kappa luggage. Not impressed with the directions, very vage. The instructions did not explain how the wires were to be connected to the light bar. The pin connector on the light bar was also on the wrong light bulb side. I had buddy solder the wires to the light bar and move the pin connector to the back of the panel.

Any info on the wiring hookup would be good

azsidewalker,

Thanks again for the info you provided! Between the wiring info and the tester I picked up, I was able to successfully get my stop light working on my GIVI top bag.

You were a lifesaver!

Bob

GT500 and Scooter,

Follow azsidewalker's wiring info and you won't have any problem.

brake light wire should be the W/B (white with black stripe)
the Gr (green) should be the running light,
the B/W (black w/white) must be the common/ground,
the Lg (lite green) should be the right turn signal,
the B (black) should be the left turn signal,

The wires with my kit for the GIVI were blue for + and black for -. I used the right-hand bulb (as you look from the back) which had the longer wires and spliced the blue wire into the white with black stripe and the black to the black with white stripe that runs on the outside of the bulb socket. And it works! The tester allowed me to check it before I spliced, to confirm the correct wires.

Good luck on hooking it up!

Bob

Hey I think the wiring diagram givin by azsidewalker is for the DL-1000. There is a different one I found somewhere for the DL-650. I'll post it if I can find it. However, I also have a question about the wiring on the V46 light kit. I emailed GIVI tonight but have not heard from them yet. I wired my taillight kit up on my DL-650K4 and cannot get it to work either. Brake lights still work fine...

I have a tail-light modulator hooked up and clipped the wires (black) to the ground and (blue) to the output of the modulator and I also get nothing on the tailbox. I tested the wiring with a meter and found that I get continuity on the lights through the lid connector, and continuity on both wires in the base. However, when the lid is closed---nothing! Wambo, what did you have to do to get it to work? When closing the lid it almost looks like the contacts don't line up but I obviously can't see it when fully closed. Ideas would be most welcome. Thanks all

It ain't worth it

When I got my givi-46 many of the riders here said it aint worth it. In other words, the little round lights on the case are almost useless. I am told that eventually the contacts between the case and the mount get dirty and cause a bad connection anyway. Unless you just want to make your bike pretty I would spend a few extra bucks on some L.E.D. lights of some sorts. I have never hooked my topcase lights up. Some might say however that every little bit helps though. I would agree if you want the headache.
