Raising Forks - I Gave It A Try

I've read a ton of posts here about raising the forks so I decided to give it a try today. I've also seen a few posts from people who tried it and didn't like it, but for me personally there's no way I'd go back to the way it was.

My bike has typically been "Twitchy" on the interstate behind large trucks or in cross winds. It just didn't want to track straight. Admittedly, a lot of it is my newbie level of experience, but I don't think all of it was. Stromette and I ran about 25 miles on the slab today after I raised the forks and while I could still feel the buffeting from the trucks and the cross wind (it was a bit breezy today) the twitchiness was completely gone. My bike tracked much straighter with no inclination to wander like I had experienced before. It also felt like it turned into corners a lot better (Stromette, you asked me about that but I didn't really notice it until I was in my subdivision heading home after we split up).

In my personal opinion, I have to agree with the others that tried it an liked it. Mine is staying right where it is.

I had a similar problem with the stock setup of the bike. It seemed that all the weight was in the rear, and the Strom just didn't want to drop into a turn. I had read an online article that suggested raising the front tubes 15mm and increasing the rear preload. I did both and the difference is astounding. By raising the tubes and increasing rear shock preload, the center of gravity is moved towards the front tire, and handling gets as close to a sport bike as a 19" front tire will allow. Handling characteristics are greatly improved, and turning is loads of fun.

I raised mine by 3/4" with lowering links and adjusted the preload on the rear shock - now the bike feels rock solid going down the road.....

I too was surprised at the difference and wished I'd done this a long time ago...

I agree!!! I put up the V-Strom for sale because I didnt like the way it handled. I wanted to go back to the sport bike side of the world.

Since I didnt have much luck selling, I got the wild hair and went out and dropped the forks....WOW... wish I done that sooner.

Now the bike drops into corners like a bike should.

Next, I think I will pull the secondaires and If that is as good, I may just keep the bike!!! Who needs a Hayabusa......

If you havent dropped your forks, try it!! It takes about 10 minutes (3 minutes of those opening your favorite drink) and is always reversable. Try it for a couple of days, you might be surprised.
