Problem installing Super Brace on 09 Wee...

Hi folks, up front I need to say I'm a noob at most things mechanical but I felt confident I could install this farkle based on info from this forum and than I had installed one before on my KLR.

I have a '09 and when I got the package in the mail it said it was for a 04-08 DL650 but I didn't worrry as I did not think there were any changes for the '09that may affect installing a fork brace.

I tried to put the brace on right and left below the fork seals, but I could not get it entirely below and on the barrel of the fork it sort of got hung up on the lip just below the fork seals so it was ~95% below the fork seals. The brace was touching the top of my fender on the left side so it could not slide down the fork any further. And when I went to pinch it together there was a fair gap between the brace so I did not want to force it, it was taking black paint off my forks with me trying to push the two brace pieces together (I guess because not all of the brace was below the fork seals and the fork swell a bit towards the top).

Also I don't know where my axle pinch bolts are so I did not losen them as per the instructions, would that have helped with my problem install?

Can I lower my fender at all to allow the brace to allow the brace to install below the fork seal lip?

See the attached photos to help explain my frustration!

Thanks....

We've been through this before. The brace does not go below the seals. That instruction pre-dated the lip. The entire lip goes above the fork leg. I hope you haven't bent anything trying to install it too low. Here is where it belongs.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

Hi there GreyWolf thanks for the additional follow up, I could not figure out from your last post where exactly it went (thus my follow up email to your reply).

Luckily I did not tighten anything up when I saw the problem, I only scratched the paint where the fork legs swell just below the fork seals.\

Based on what I see on your picture it looks like I install the brace on the forks themselves right on top of the fork seals. If that is true how do my forks move in and out of my fork legs under load? I have very little of the fork seal rubber above the top of the fork tubs so the brace would be tightened right onto the chromed portion of my forks, it that okay?

Middle name = NOOB!! :0)

No! The brace does not touch the chrome. You can see the seal above the brace in the picture in my previous post. It goes slightly higher than you have been trying but not that high. Maybe it's time you got on site help as you are not visualizing the process at all. I don't know why you started another thread but here is a pic from the last one. The bottom of the lip (red arrow) sits on the ledge around the seal (blue arrow).

I started another thread in this forum as I was not getting any more responses to my follow up questions after I posted my photos, I thought it more appropriate to post it here given the forum title.

I don't think this will work for me as I have the swelling on my fork tubes just below the fork seals (although now I see the swelling in your photo close up as well). So when I tried to put the brace there it was not big enough in diametre to fit there as I tried to show in my attached photos.

I'm away from home for work right now. When I get back I'll try to located just slightly higher than I was originally trying. Blair the fellow who sells the brace has offered to work with me over the phone when I'm next to the bike so I'm hopeful all will work out!

Ps: GW, are your photos from a 2009 Wee....?

Thanks again.

Mine is a 2007. There are no changes in the forks between years though. Plenty of people have installed the Superbrace on 2009 models. There were no further responses because there really was no further information to add. Having Blair on the phone as you are doing the installation should handle things for you. The problem is you are trying to put the smaller opening of the lip around the fork leg instead of above it. The larger diameter part below the lip is what clamps the fork leg. The lip sitting on top of the leg insures the position is correct.

Ah I see I didn't realize there was a lip/cut out on the brace that allows it to sit on top of fork tube.

Eureeka!!

Thanks again GW.
