Traveling with Hard bags and loads!

On my recent trip to Reno I noticed a lot of people traveling on various bikes with both soft and hard luggage. I followed a biker with a loaded bike (V-Strom) and noticed at speeds over 90+ the bike started to shake and become unstable! He was still cranking it on! Riders need to realize that the bags both soft and hard have a manufactures top allowed speed! Normally between 120 to 140kms before the bike becomes unstable. Riders on smaller bikes, IE the 650s, need to be aware of this. Riders need to take in consideration their weight, Weight of load and way the bike is packed. Everything contributes to the stability of the bike. In Europe most bikes have spring loaded mounting systems to take up the shock of high speeds. My 06, 1000 will run about 90 before it starts shaking. So dont go so fast! And when the bike starts shaking and dancing, GET OFF THE GAS! The Bike is telling you something! Bob.

Back from Reno.......2500+ miles with both my HT panniers and a large Dry bag lashed to my little 6Fiddy. More than a couple of times I had the "opportunity" to attempt to bury the needle. No instability at any speed with all the gear mounted up. I'd be curious if any of the other Stroms that did the "Hair on Fire" ride Saturday had any "issues" at higher speeds.

You might want to give it a try without you luggage and see if you get the same feedback from the bike. I had the needle buried a couple of times going back to Boise from Reno on my 650 and had no problems at all. I had my small bags on (E21's) and a V46 trunk. Or, maybe it was due to a crosswind condition?

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

On our last trip loaded 2UP tour I had to adjust our Damping Force on the rear shock (bottom) at about 1000 miles into the trip. We were either loaded heavier than before, it's gotten worn out a bit, or we just got into an odd rolling set of twisties.

For me it is about incrementally increasing performance. Did I notice the behavior that late because of the road, or just because it took me that long to get in the groove to push the bike to where I could feel the effects of under damping?

BTW, I got on a truck scale on this trip and took these measurements 2UP:

600 lbs on the rear wheel
350 lbs on the front wheel

The scale was clicking off in increments of 50 lbs, but you can get the idea of the ratio of our weight distribution fully loaded when the bike was not accelerating or braking hard.

Pat,
After returning from Reno at higher than safe speeds (8 hour trip in 6.5 hours) and reading about your mishap I kind of sat back and took a look at myself and decided that I am way to old for that sh!t anymore (not that age really has anything to due with safe riding) and have vowed to ride at more reasonable speeds from here on out. I'm not saying I'll never go over the posted limits but I don't think I'll be doing much in the way of crusing with the needle buried anymore. Thanks for sharing and heal well.
