Custom exotic exhaust

A very good friend, certified Ducati and Suzuki mechanic, owns his own repair and fabrication facility on the Willow Springs Raceway. He has developed an exhaust SYSTEM for the new Ducati 999 racebikes that has been dynoed to produce an extra 9 H.P! He rode my V'Strom yesterday (his first experience with one) and was quite impressed! He said he could do a trick system (a-la Ducati) on the 'Strom. This is a two into one system complete with new headers and pipe UNDER the seat (tail end will obviously be modified).
If I do this (expensive for me, yes, since I'm the first), but the price would be severely reduced if he finds a market for it.
Anybody interested in this type of setup? He'll be dismantalling the bike's exhaust next week to give an estimate.

btw, Kelly is a major player, not a runner of a "chop shop." Since he's at the track, he services many of the magazine bikes that test there for those like Don Canet and others.

Sounds very interesting. I might be interested depending on the outcome and the price. Please do keep coming with the info.
2 into 1 is good since it works better on bottom and midrange versus top end and this is what V-strom is tuned for.
He needs to make a large canister or othervise it will be to loud and it will need to be repacked to often.
Looking forward to the results.

Exhaust

I'd prefer a 2 into 1 but not an underseat. I'd like it to be a high mount where the existing can is now. I don't want to lose underseat storage or lose the ability to use side hardbags which use a rear fender mount.

Actualy I agree also, as I dont like the idea of messing with any of the bikes functionality, after all I do like the looks of everything in the back also.
Having just one muffler on one side only I feel would not look right either.
After having Two brothers oval cans on mine and finding them too loud and have a lot of experience with exhaust systems on many different bikes, My conclusion is that 2 into 2 full system with 20" (large) round canisters set up in the same position would perform best (with K&N filter PCIII, TRE and dyno tuning),long repacking periods(couple of years) and would look great, not to mention loosing 25 or so lbs of weight.

Hope you look at that option, cause I'd love to have a full system.

Why mess with repacking??? I have Remus cans on my DL1000 that never require repacking. I would not buy cannisters (like Two Brothers) that require periodic repacking - there are better alternatives available.

I did not indicate that Two-B neded repacking, it's just that i had owals which are always a bit louder than round cans do to volume size of packing, and being up high found them a bit louder than I liked.

I can asure you that if you put a biger diamiter free flowing heder pipes in front of them or any other stright through cans including your Remus that after a while they will get a lot louder, and what i did indicate is that with a single can this hapens a lot quicker, becuse now you have all that preasure going through half the space.

Full headers in combination with smaller canisters, eg. say full M4 system on a TLS starts getting a lot louder after several k miles while a set of bolt on canisters like Yosh will last and sound pretymuch the same 4 or 5 times that. It also depends on how hard you ride ie track days etc, anotherwords high rpm for longer periods of time
detiorates and blows out more packing.
This is all is more true for V-twins do to big pulses versus I4'rs.
Thats why I4'rs always run single can while big twins always have two.
If you stand behind any big twin with stock exhaust you can feel the the exhaust presure 4or 5 feet away. Put on a full free flowing stright through any aftermarket system and the force doubles. Big twins need to breath well and it's why they respond so much better to free flowing exhausts.

Yes that's true and the Vtwin motors have proven that they make more power with a 2x1 pipe (Witness HD and BMW) tho not Guzzi.
*But in this case it may not be feasable to make both power and keep the sounds muffled enough with the placement of the cans so high.

Fact is they often do make more power but mostly on bottom and somewhat in midrange but usualy never on top end and this is why any big V-twin race bikes always run 2 into 2.

My TLS on the other hand, made more power and torque every where with the full M4 2 into 2, than full M4 2 into 1.

An interesting note, my TLS also had more hp and torque in bottom and midrange than my Vstrom. If I knew how I could post dyno charts if I can find them.

Just wondering, anybody upgrade calipers yet?
