Install Symtec ATV Heated Grip with Vista Universal Lock

I want to upgrade the grip heaters on both the Wee and Vee. I had a hard time deciding between the Symtec ATV warmers and the Hot Grips. To be honest I still haven't decided. I did decided to start with a pair of Symtec grips, then evaluate before buying a second pair of grips.



Looking at the installed vista universal lock there is a space between the grip and the lock which will allow the wire to pass through without undesirable pressure on the wire.


The heated section does not wrap all the way around the grips. This restricts where the cable can be aligned on the grip.




A quick wrap with some self sealing silicone tape. Great stuff that can handle up to 500 degrees and leaves no sticky stuff behind.


I did not feel comfortable having the grip wire passing so close to the nut on the Vista lock, so I rotated the entire assembly down.

Overall this is an incredibly easy install process to this point. I'll finish wiring it up later this week. I like the feel, or lack of feel to this setup. You really can't tell they are in there and grips feel completely normal with no lumps. I'm curious if incomplete wrap around the grip will provide a satisfying effect or if I'll wish they were all the way around.

I believe the wire is safe from crimping. Given a choice I would have preferred the wire be at the bottom of the grip, but that is not possible.

I will report back after I've had a chance to test the setup.

Install completed. A few more notes. Grip puppies will just freely spin around the grips. The smooth surface of the Symtec offer no friction to hold the puppies in place. They must be tacked down. I tried hairspray, but no luck. I ended up using an Elmers (the school glue people) spray adhesive. Seems to have done the trick perfectly.

The Heat Troller appears to work well, but when combined on the same circuit as a voltage meter it will take some getting used to. The troller cycles on and off every second. On for a second then off for a second, on and on it goes. I understand the concept, but it is also reflected in the voltage meter jumping every second from 14.9v to 13.5v and back again. Makes it challenging to monitor the voltage.

You had the grip puppies spin? Mine haven't budged since Ive put them on.

I've been thinking about getting the heat triller. I probably just need to break down and get it.

Interesting. I did use my standard water and dish soap solution to put them on. It's always dried and been stable in the past. Left me spinning this time.

I've wondered about that. Would it be different if it was on a separate circuit? I would think not. Seems to really defeat the utility of the meter, especially if you were running more heated gear.

You need a meter with more lag in the reading. Cheaper may be better in that situation.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

Wouldn't some sort of averaging be what you need? Do the Datels and the like not do something to handle this? A big reason to get a meter is when you have heated gear with various PWMs and if they all work like this it seems pretty useless.

Am I missing something here, cause I kinda assumed that they worked this way?

All I can say is http://www.amotostuff.com/Merchant2/...650_electrical works fine. Add heat and the reading goes down. It's easy to see the lag as it reads low for a few seconds after being at a stop.

That was the meter I've used for the last couple of years, and until this cycling troller it worked exactly as you mentioned. Last week I added a Datel meter and was stunned to see how far apart the two meter readings were. Usually a volt or more. The Datel was dead on with my multimeter. I had no idea my old meter was so far off. Each meter was connected to a different relay on the bike, but not sure why that should make a difference, they are identical relays. In fairness I could not get the multimeter to the relay powering the old meter so I didn't get a good reading on that one. I've removed the old meter before I had a chance to see how it would react to the troller.

I've decided at some point I'm going to take the Datel off the hand grip fuse and run it directly to the battery. After all, it's the battery/charging system that I'm really wanting to monitor.

The troller is cycling pretty slowly (1 second on, 1 off) giving the meter plenty of time to jump. Fortunately it's not too hard to see the top and bottom of the range so it's not useless, just more challenging that I'd like it to be.

Had a chance to take a 200 mile ride with the grips today in temps ranging from high 20s to low 30s. Overall they work very well. There is no concern about the heat wrap not going all the way around the grip. Plenty of warmth. Could not turn the grip up over 50% and usually ran lower than that.

Watching the voltage meter constantly jump from 14.7 to 13.2 is mildly annoying, but it's still easy enough to get the low end reading. I did some testing and found that if I connect to a different fuse on the other side of the Blue Seas fuse box I'll get the jump down to about .1volts. I can live with that. I tested the battery and there is no jumping around of voltage there, but obviously I want a relay so I will need to tolerate some level of fluctuation.

In the end I like this setup enough to order it for the wife's Wee. It allows me to run the grip and grip puppy setup I've grown so accustom to over the last couple of years. She's used to the same setup so it's a better choice than the slightly larger Hot Grips.
