SW-Motech Engine Guards Install Questions

Hi, Guys. Just installed the SW-Motech engine guards on my '03 DL1000. I guess it looks ok but I do have some questions and was hoping someone would have thoughts... Check out my pics at http://ken.linuxcrypt.com/swmotech/ to see what I'm talking about but.. Things don't look quite even to me. Guards appear to be sticking out more on the left side of the bike than on the right. Also, the big bolt is really sticking out a lot. Is this normal and do I just need to live with it or is it possible I did something wrong. Don't really see how I could have done anything wrong..its only 5 bolts, right?? Was i just expecting perfection?? I'd appreciate anything you guys might have to offer.

Did you use the supplied washers as spacers to get both sides even? I think I used two on each side as well as the large spacer before I was happy with mine.

As it stands currently there is one spacer and one washer on each side. As much as that bolt is sticking out I don't think even two extra washers would make that much difference.

The bolt does stick out that far, I didn't like it either so I simply cut it off with a dremmel tool (you need a good cut of wheel). Then polish it a little and looks fine.

I had to mess with the washers a little since the instructions are next to useless. But losely fitting everything and playing with the washer placement you can get it perfect, no problem.

Mine is the 650 but if I remember correctly the 1000 has different size spacers for each side. You might want to double check that.

Probably... I had to stare at the instructions for a while to decypher the washer placement, and I think even with that the instructions were still wrong to some extent. Nice. You have to experiment with the washer placement, on the left side I think, in order to get it right. The washers on the upper attachment, not the large engine bolt, the upper part.

I second that one. Have to say I'm disappointed to hear that the bolt does stick out so much. That definitely could have been done better. I'll either have to cut it off as ChrisW123 did or I'll have to find some other way to space it out by finding some more washers. There were only 2 spacers in the kit that were large enough for the bolt to go through.

Mac, I just completed the installation on my DL 1000 and had the same results.. the left side is 1/2" further out than the right side and I have 5/8" of thread protruding from the nut on the left side. I sent an email to ********* Sunday to see if I had done something wrong.
I guessed that I would have to play with the washers and the dremmel tool cut off was my answer to the excess treads. These bars are built xx strong..

+ 1 for USELESS instructions.

For those that read this thread and have not yet done an install let me say that you do not want to use the same torque specs for the hardware that comes w/the bars that you would on the same stock hardware. I broke a bolt and had to drill the dang thing out. Needless to say I learned a lesson on bolt grade.

Ok Mac I have found the culprit on these bars... first is the poor instructions or lack thereof.. second is our inattenativeness while installing. Part # 10 is a spacer with a height of 18 mm and part # 7 is the mate with an height of 12 mm the difference in the bars allingning evenly from the front view of your bike. I just finished fixing mine and thought you'd appreciate the help.. every other post said fool with the spacers these are the only two that are different in height or thickness.. Mine looks great now except for the excess length on the bolt... now where is my dremmel tool????
