Honest Bob, you've been my inspiration

yeah it is an old thread but I revived it last week to look into making a mud guard for my engine. Like Bob's original idea, I am not interested in pivoting on rocks and stumps, I want to keep mud build up off the engine -- especially the calcium chloride stuff prevalent on the Dalton when wet. I'm in the stages of discussing and planning a trip to Deadhorse so I grabbed Bob's thread and a sheet of metal and went to town on it to see if there was any merit to the idea floating around in my head. The metal is quite thin but the bends have given it good strength. Since what metal I had available from other projects was wider than Bob's, I fitted it but haven't cut it down yet. I have not yet inserted air flow passages for things like the oil cooler or exhaust pipe. At this stage it looks like something from a MadMax movie, but screened-over air holes and a coating of bedliner will resolve any aesthetic issues for those into form over function.

How far up do I really need to bring the mud guard for purposes of mud? At this point it is up to the engine/crash guard. I need to ensure I have adequate air flow so the engine does not overheat. At the same time I need to minimize breaks in the mud guard or else it will not be effective in guarding from mud. Ideas on where to get air through, other than to the oil cooler and the exhaust pipe?

Back in 1986 I was on the Dalton up to the Arctic Circle and it was dry. If I am so blessed like that again this trip, I won't even need the mud guard. I maintained the OEM braces for the plastic engine guard Suzuki gives you with the bike so that I can always switch back to that plastic one. The OEM brackets are useful in securing my mud guard from rattling at speed or on washboards.

I think it looks bad ass!! Adventure bikes should have a little Mad Max look I think. They need to perform, not look cool. (Although the "I don't care what it looks like" aesthetic can look really cool when done right )

I think its plenty high enough. You could probably lower it if you wanted. Looks like you have the fender extended as well?

You got the right idea to drill holes for the oil cooler. I don't think the exhaust will need much airflow but somebody may correct me.

You could heat wrap the exhaust, may help keep that whole area stay cooler and will add to your apocalypse look.

Hola, nice. I just watched an episode of Craftsman's Legacy that was about a guy that makes German style Body Armor. Your effort reminds me of that work.
