DL/DR650 Panniers

I hope this is an acceptable question for the Weestrom group although also involves a Thumper.

I did some searching but not finding what I am looking for - my bikes: 2015 DL650ADV with OEM hard panniers/rack and I also have 2011 DR650 with no panniers or rack.

I want to set up the DR650 with pannier racks and soft luggage - I hear good things about Nelson Rigg but open to suggestions. Again, apologies for asking on this forum when it involves the DR as well but my hope is you guys have knowledge of both.

From my research the OEM bags on the Wee are SW Motech made for Suzuki. So, the question is: can I buy the Motech racks for the DR and use my Wee hard bags as well as mount soft panniers when I don't want to hard cases?

It would be nice to have both options for each bike as sometimes the hard bags are bulky - especially when on the back roads. We are planning on running the PuppyDog trail this summer and thought the DR with soft bags would be best.

Anyway, hope someone might have more experience with this and can offer suggestions. Also thinking of calling rep at Twisted Throttle or similar supplier as some of them are well versed in these products.

Appreciate any input!

I also have a DL and DR 650 but my situation is a little different. I Had the DR 1st outfitted with Happy Trails SU racks and Pelican 1550 cases as panniers. When I started looking for a DL I purposely did not one with a rack system installed unless it was a Happy Trail SU racks. I ended up finding a 2013 DL with stock boxes and racks and negotiated them out of the price. The day I got the bike home I ordered SU racks and now my Pelicans work on either bike.

If you are only looking for pannier supports for soft luggage there are some cost effective (not very structural) offerings on ebay that will work fine. If you think you are ever going to get hard panniers Happy Trails would be my choice. They are built extremely well and are strong but they do cost more.

Thanks for the reply. I am familiar with Happy Trails and have purchase from them. Still scouring the web for ideas, might just be easier to grab a rack and soft bags and not bother with interchangability.

Ride safe!
