Anyone ever make their own side racks?

I have two metal cases that I could use as side luggage my question is has anyone on here ever attempted this? I don't know if I should use steel or square tubular aluminium. Any ideas gang?

Try here

Doesn't look like much, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Take a look at the best racks; how and why they are built a certain way.

I would consider the Happy Trails rack to be the standard to beat on price and quality. http://www.happy-trail.com or

If you can make it cheaper and more secure... then your ahead of the game. $371.00 is pretty reasonable for a motorcycle part when you add the history and reputiation this product has with the adventure crowd. It would be hard to come up with something more secure that wouldn't be over-engineered.

My bad! Didn't read the whole thing and the pictures kinda look like hard bags.

Thanks gang. I already have a topcase and I see what you mean with the Happy Trails rack. That is kind of what I was thinking about making on my own but was not sure how much abuse it would take if I made it. I have the soft bag idea but since I already have these ex military night vision google cases that are waterproof and tough as nails I was thinking of making something of my own.

I have thought about this too. You can buy the standard Givi mounts that fit their cases so making frames for Givi cases does not seem that hard. But like you I was thinking of using less expensive cases like Pelican or something. What I could not find is fittings for the case. You would have to fabricate those. Slots for the bottom of the case is no problem but I am not sure how to fabricate the top locking part.

So starting from scratch I would still use the Givi method for holding tight at the bottom. This is easy to fabricate (even easier since I have a small lathe.) But I have not come up with a good locking method for the top. I could just use a padlock but then you have to deal with that rattling around while riding.

I think this would be a fun project for winter time. Let me know if you get any ideas and I will do the same.

I was not even worried about making them quick release just something to hold gear as cheaply as I could that would still look tough. I think the metal boxes I have would also help if I ever laid her down too. So far nobody seams to have done it themselves which makes me wonder why. I guess I will just have to figure this one out and if it is feasable to do. Thanks for your input though.
