17-tooth Front Sprocket

Finally installed the 17 tooth front sprocket (I have a thread about that somewhere here). This is my ride report. First impression was awesome, but my 100-mile impression is I should stick with the 15T or don't go larger than 16. The 17 is like overdrive when you're pulling a trailer. It bogs down on the slightest hill. I rode the "Alpine Loop" yesterday (around Utah's Mt. Timpanogos, past Robert Redford's Sundance resort and property). I could not find the right gear to save my life--first great was too low, but in the steep hairpins second seemed too high. Even gradual rises on our divided highway required me (made me feel like I needed) to downshift from sixth to fifth.

Original objective reached: 75 MPH at 5500 rpm, right in the sweet spot. Unintended consequence: can't ride there much unless the road is flat without a wind.

Recommendation: don't exceed 16t unless you live somewhere quite flat or you ride high speeds often, for long periods. I'll put this sprocket on when I ride to Vegas or Reno (which I never do), but I'm wishing I actually had a 16. I'll be back to the 15 for my late-Sep ride up to and through Teton National Park.

Probably should specify that you're talking about a DL650.

Besides, what's so darn magical about lugging around at 5,500 rpm? That engine needs to spin.

Also what year of DL650?

2012+ is different than 2011 and earlier.

Loved 16 tooth in my2006 DL650. Didn't feel a need for it on my 2012 DL650. Feel stock 17 tooth is great on my 2015 DL1000

2006 DL650: 202,000 km 125,500 miles, Sold
2012 DL650 139,500+ km, 86,700+ miles. Sold
2015 DL1000 New July 2015 180,000+ km, 112,000 miles.

This can help preventing from cars pulling out in front of you (SMIDSY)

Can't everyone just read my mind? LOL... 2008 DL650. Banana yellow, too. And yah, I'm more conviced now that the engine needs to spin, as bwringer says.
