New DL1000 is too tall for me - I have some ideas though...

I am 5'11" and all legs... I've flat footed bikes which nobody else in our group of friends has been able to... But I've met my match.

I can only flat foot one foot on the Strom, and maneuvering at a stop is pretty difficult due to it.

I'm not terribly hot on using a lowering kit to bring the height down.

I have heard that the DL650's seat is about an inch lower. Can I simply grab a 650's seat for my bike, and switch the two out depending on the kind of riding I'm about to go do. (city versus highway)

Also, is the 650 the same height as the 1000 without the seat difference? I ask because if so, I could go sit on a 650 at a dealer, and see if the seat would be worthwhile.

Otherwise you don't think adjusting the pre-load in the rear could bring it down a little, do you? I assume not.

Want to try one out? I've got a spare 650 seat.

You pay shipping and a $75.00 deposit. If you don't like it send it back, and I will refund your deposit. As long as it's still in good order

It's got less than 1000 miles on it.

I only kept it in the event I decided on a custom seat, I would have a spare seat pan so no down time on the bike.

** added, +1 on the 650 seat sucks! **

The DL650 seat should fit you fine. And yes, it snaps in just like the 1k seat. A lot of DL1000 and 650 trade seats all the time. A lot of 650 owners want the 1k seat and vice versa. You'll have no problem selling your 1k seat.

Yes, adjusting the preload will lower the rear. That's really it's only function, as the spring rate doesn't change.

You should just practice with your bike. I'm a stump at 5'6" and manage pretty well, even though I can only get my toes on the ground. Granted, my bike is lowered and inch, but you've got 5" on me.

When I stop at lights I put my tires in one of the "trenches" left by the sagging pavement, so my feet get to the ground a little better.

I have a 650 seat if you want to do a swap.

Hmmm - I'm the same shape and size as you and have no problem touching down on either a wee or a vee. Besides trying a wee-strom seat, try raising the forks 3/4 inch the triple clamps. Motorcycledaily.com has an article and review on this from several years ago, suggesting it improves handling and steering as well.

My inseam-challenged colleague rides a wee with a sargent seat. He has both feet almost flat - not too tipsy at all.

WOW - thanks for the all the incredibly quick and helpful replies.

This forum is alot more active than I assumed it would be!

Oweing to the ease of adjusting the rear preload, I will play with that soon and see what happens.

Thank you for all the offers on seat trades - but I haven't decided quite yet.

You'll have to try the DL650 seat for yourself.

But the Germans cut the rubber feet on the seat in half, lowering the seat anotehr 8mm or so.
