What can I do to my rear fender?

I've seen long fenders, but this is almost ridiculous. Anyone seen or done anything practical to shorten it up a bit? I see there are many constraints.

1. There isn't a clever place for the license plate if you hack off the fender.

2. The black plastic piece is one huge piece - so if you mess it up, you're buying the whole thing, and this doesn't allow for the typical fender eliminator kit like many sportbikes use.

3. The rear key mechanism is held in there with that huge black piece, so you can't take the whole thing off and work out something else for a license plate.

Any ideas?

I trimmed the bottom of mine about 4" shorter and kept the same shape.
It looks way better in my opinion.

This is what it looks like shorter.

Seriously, SpeedStar's mod looks great in person. Looks a lot sportier and less utilitarian.

It is a Warrior in the background. I miss it as I sold it a few weeks back.
I don't know what I was thinking. I just didn't ride it as much and thought it was a waste to let it sit unused. Now I want to ride it.

I always thought there was somethine 'cooler' about the way your bike looked. What did you use to cut and sand it to make it look like it was made that way? Considering how much it rains in SoCal its definitley something I'd like to do to make the beast a little less ugly.

Thanks Mark. I made a template of the bottom of the fender with cardboard and just moved it up the fender about 4" and taped it there to use as a guide.

Next, I cut a little below the edge of the template with a dremel cutoff wheel to get the bottom portion of the fender out of the way.

Then I went back with the dremel sanding wheel to smooth up to the line of the template.

Then to get the final smooth edge, I sanded by hand with a block to keep the edge straight.

The final sand was with cardboard as it polishes the plastic and makes it look OEM instead of a sanded edge.

Very easy mod and makes a big difference in the look.

Speed you and I have a lot in common. That looks really good. I did a similar thing to my Hayabusa and it came out pretty good - but I really like the tip about sanding the final with cardboard for a nice factory finish. Excellent idea.

The cardboard is just abrasive enough to remove any fine scratches in the plastic from sanding and will polish to a smooth finish. Glad you like the tip. I agree, it seems we have made a lot of similar choices. 8)
