Matching Saddlebags

Givi offers a selection of painted panels with the PLX bags, but the blue for the 07 Vee wasn't one of the choices. I ordered them with gloss black, but really wanted the bags to integrate better with the rest of the bike.

About a week ago I went to Color-rite.com and saw that you can order paint by make, model and year. You can get anything from a little touch up kit on up. I ordered a can of aerosol color spray, and after talking to the sales guy (very friendly and helpful) ordered a can of U-150 clearcoat to go with it.

The paint arrived within a few days. Yesterday I took the panels off the Givi bags and painted them. Not much to tell about doing the job that's any different from any paint job: 90% prep, 10% application. I probably could have skipped the primer I put on, but I was worried the color wouldn't be true if there was a black undercoat. I put on a coat of gray sandable primer first. The paint comes with instructions on timing the color coats and the clear coats for best results. Here are a couple of photos.

Sure, I got the bags and mounts from Twisted Throttle. No complaints about them, but the shipping company destroyed the box the hard bags were in. Fortunately the bags were fine.

If you're thinking of ordering, I suggest adding the inner soft bags. They're made to fit the shape of the hard bags, and they are super nice. Heavy gray nylon with red trim; very classy. I used to stuff some canvas marine bags in the Concours hard bags; these are a lot nicer for sure!

Next upgrade is waiting for admorelights.com to come up with an LED kit to fit under the hardbag lenses. I used their stuff before; it's worth waiting for. They say they'll have the new kit with tail, turn, and brake lights integrated by this Spring.

They didn't say, but I'd guess the light kit will come in around $75 to $150.

The panels are removable by taking out 6 tiny screws inside the bag. You'll also need to take the panels off if you choose to add the 3M reflective tape inside the lens ($35). I did; it makes the lens useful for more than decoration. Once the panel is off you can sand and paint. If I was doing it again, I'd get two cans of color spray and one can of U-150 clearcoat. Then I'd skip the primer stage and build the color layer instead. The screws are cheesy and the heads are soft; use a screwdriver with a good tip or replace them with stainless.

I'm going riding today (thanks Dr. King!) and I'll get some hi-res snaps of the bags. The other ones are phone camera pics.

They sell the 3M tape as an accessory to the bags. They're cut to size, but I have to wonder if you couldn't do the same thing cheaper yourself. It was convenient.

Here's a couple of better shots of the bike with the bags before and after. (Not that much better, I can't upload larger files. But you get the idea).

Great pic's! When you say They, do you mean GIVI or TwistedThrottle?
Email those pic's to me! [email protected]

I don't really know if Givi makes the kit or TT, but it's on the TT site as an option. It's really just a sheet of 3M reflective material pre-cut to fit the lens.
