HID lighting

I've read several posts about auxiliary lights but has anyone upgraded the stock headlights to HID? From what I've learned, I think the HID lighting draws less power, something that any Wee owner is in short supply of. Some folks have become quite creative to find some spare wattage, super bright LED bulbs in the brake lights and etc..in order to add heated grips,vests and so on.

Pics of before and after (if you have) would be great.

Now that's what I'm talking about. Wonder what brand was used? I bought a HID kit for my BMW LT from cqlight.

A few of our club member use HIDs.

They work well so far.
Better light emission, lower power consumption, higher visibility.

I bought 2 sets of Pilot HID conversion kits for my Pacifica. I have installed only the low beam so far and they work great. Many things are more visible on the road.

They have H4 low/high and H4 Bi-Xenon conversion kits that should fit a m/c.

what about legality of hid - oem vs aftermarket

Remember reading that hid lights only approved from factory, light had to be aimed correctly, or have an autoleveling feature? Would love to install a set, but do not want to attract attention from my LEO. Would any LEO speak to the legality of aftermarket lights?

I'm not a LEO, but I've done a ton of research on the topic. As far as I know, the only way you can legally add HIDs to a vehicle outside of the factory is to use OEM HID parts during the install. This means, not only the bulbs and ballasts, but more importantly the projector or reflector housing. I can't imagine how blinding the Strom's big reflector lights would be with HID bulbs in lenses designed for halogen. I recently did a full HID conversion on my Mazda 6 using projectors from a BMW M3 and a D2S HID kit. The result is fabulous, I'll never be without HIDs again. But simply dropping HID kits into non-HID designed reflector lenses is asking for trouble, if not from LEOs but the hazard of blinding the ever-living-crap out of oncoming traffic. A true HID conversion on a Strom would be impressive, but very, very labor intensive. The projectors I used on my car dropped right in the stock location, otherwise I never would've tackled the job. Alignment is important too, and that gets difficult if you have to fab the projectors in there somehow.

www.hidplanet.com is a great resource for HID info. But I will strongly recommend against using a plug and play kit on the Strom for the sake of other drivers.

good point mzbuckeye. they look great, but I would only want that type of lighting on occasion. perferably when the cops aren't around. I think i'm going to add a pair of whelen tir3's under my fairing for extra visibility.

I have read a great deal about this subject. All motor vehicle lighting must be federally certified by the vehicle manufacturer. And every lamp assembly is designed as a complete system. Specific style of bulb, in a specific reflector, lens assembly and so on. Any partial modification is not a complete engineering solution. And it's illegal.

Doesn't mean you couldn't put some kind of universal HID kit in your bike and make a s^#%load of light. But it might not be in the right places. And as it's been said, you could be asking for trouble. LEO trouble or failure of your lighting system trouble. I've upgraded my bulbs but they're still H-4 halogen of stock wattage draw and they are completely FMVSS compliant.
