suspension and brake upgrade

After the Strom gathering in Reno in June I found a few short comings of my Wee. Suspension and braking. So I took it to one of the suspension Guru's in Palo Alto, Ca, AfterShocks. After an evaluation here is what we decided to do.

Fork re-valve, front spring mods and gold Valve emulators.
Rear oem shock re-valve, spacer for spring, and add a Penske remote reservoir for compression dampening. We kept the rear shock, one because it is an ok shock, two because it only had 2000 miles on it and three it had remote preload. Saved maybe $700 or so than an Ohlins or full Penske set up the same way.

Unbelievable results. Probably the smoothest riding bike I have owned. Everything improved beyond my expectations.

And while they were at it and had things broke down i had them install SS brake lines to the front only and new EBC brake pads. Now this is how a bike like the Wee is supposed to brake.

This is the third bike Phil has redone and set up. There is nothing like profession suspension tuning and set up. No matter how much you think you know, you really don't. And the Wee's oem suspension needs some big time help.

Mike: What did the whole job cost you?

I'm on the other side of the country, and no one around here with those abilities. If I shipped them my forks and shock, could they do the same thing to them?

Yep, they do it all the time. All they need is your riding style and weight.

Did you keep the stock springs (front forks and rear)? And if so what do they measure and how much do you weigh?

He modified the front springs and used a spacer for the rear. I was about 80% to preload on oem and with the spacer I am set at about 50%. Spacer $10. About 200 lbs

Gold Valve Cartridge Emulators (for damping rod forks)

Damping rod forks are notorious for being both too harsh and too easy to bottom. This is the nature of damping rod fixed orifice forks. Until now, all you could do is change spring rate, oil viscosity and damping hole size. The best available was a serious compromise.
The Gold Valve Cartridge Emulator is another one of the outstanding inventions from Race Tech’s Paul Thede. Simply put; Emulators make damping rod forks perform like well-tuned cartridge forks. Emulators are tunable valves that sit on top of the damping rods and are held in place with the main springs. This makes them both simple to install and completely tunable for all conditions and rider preferences.
Track tests consistently produce lap times that are 1 or more seconds a lap faster while Cruisers and Gold Wing owners rave at the increased control and ride quality.

What mods did they do for fork springs? Shorten to add spring rate then add a spacer. I'll be getting the Race Tech stuff soon. To bad they don't offer front or rear springs.

Added a remote reservoir. Interesting. Spendy. Is it really needed for regular riding?

The oem shock has oil and air in the cartridge. No efficiency for rebound dampening and no compression dampening at all. The remote and re-valve gives it all to you. Keeping the oem shock keeps the remote preload. Worth it? Its up to the rider but after having pro suspension set ups on my last three bikes I really notice the difference and it is worth it for me anyway. All the cool suspension stuff is no good after installation if it isn't set up properly.
