Thumbs up IMC Motorcom MIT-100 install adventure

I'm going to use this thread to document my install of the recently purchased Intercom unit with inputs for Radio, Cell phone and Music player.

I have a Suz DL650, an iPod Nano, an LG400 cell phone. I will be using the intercom with my wife, and have no radio yet (but ima hammy, so who knows what I'll add, KI6ISO)

Ok, so my initial impressions:

1) The included install documentation is horrid.
2) The cables are labeled clearly (thank you) and looking at the cover of the box helps you know what is what. There are a lot of included adapters which add to the initial confusion, but staring at it enough, I figured it out.
3) The PTT button is only for the radio, not for the intercom. The intercom I guess using either VOX or is simply on all the time.
4) The power wires are long enough to go anywhere under the seat, provided you put the main box under the seat. The power wire is fused. There appears to be a connector so you can solder one end to the bike and still be able to quick-release (if I dont end up squeezing it with a wrench to make it stick in place)

Some minor notes:
The pictures are all outdated.
The connectors for the helmets have IE1394 (Firewire) style connectors, however the box calls them USB connectors. Tis good they used the better connectors however.

I have no idea where I'm going to tap into my virgin bike. They say to put it after the ignition, but I'm not yet sure where that is. After I figure that out, I'll add more notes here.

On the electrical system:

I decided it was time for a power system for my custom toys. Both for my current 2 items, and for the future items I may choose to add. I picked up some parts at rat-shack and spent the day hunting for parts. This is not really part of the MIT100 installation, however having a good base to build from was important.

I found only 1 Orange/White, it was in the dealer connector under the left of the seat. This is a white female connector with a rubber easy remove cover. This block as the one 12 V Orange White, plus two other 3-5ish volt lines, as well as a ground. This is where I am now stealing power for my custom power strip. I am going to ground strait to the battery however.

Revistied 2 days later: I have since found out later that we should not tap into Orange/White wire at any point. When you start the bike up, it sucks a lot of power out of this cable. I also dont like the music turning off the minute the kickstand goes down, because what if I'm stopping temporary for something like reading a map, or want to talk on the cell phone, which I'd never do while driving, have to stop for that... So clearly I'm going to move my tap point.


On the install:

I had to use the extension cables that come included in the kit to run the Audio/Cell/Radio lines up to the handle bars.

I found it unacceptable to have a cable that would/could disconnect somewhere in the middle of under the gas tank, so I heatstrink wrapped this point so I'd never get a break.

The passenger in/out port was easy to find a home, lots of places to put it on the rear of the bike.

The driver headset cable is not long enough to feed to the handlebars without an extension cord. Since this was not included, I didnt mount this cable, its sorta just hanging out the front of the seat and tucked into the right faring.

Final install thoughts:

The hardest parts of this installation was running the wires from the box to the handle bars, because I had to lift the gas tank, which means I had to remove the side faring. For a newbie, this was a challenge, but it was also very fun to explore my bike this way.
The second hardest part was putting the ear pads and mics into the helmets. Ugg that sucked; getting it in the right spot.


Performance so far:
My iPod really spits out the power, so music came out really loud. I cant say how this will be on the road yet, but I'm expecting it to work well enough. The base is a little lacking, so I'ma gunna carry a sub-woofer on my back (kidding!)

I'm finding that with my current helments, I have too much wind noise to talk above 50mph. I need better helments and I need to revisit the windshield issue.

I bought the same unit last year for myself and my father in law's harley. I LOVE it.

I came off of a switched wire, but cannot remember where (I am out of town on business or I would look for you). I ran the rider's wire out the left trim piece (under the tank) and the passenger out the right under the seat (wrapped the cable in electrical tape and fabric where it contact the seat). music cable (the shorter one) comes up through my tank bra and goes to my zune (your ipod) in the tank bag. GPRS comes up in front of the tank and the ptt button (only for GPRS or CB, intercom is vox and works PERFECT) is mounted verticaly on the left mirror stem, with the button towards the bar. I can reach it with my left thumb. I folded the phone cable back and taped it off. I talk all day on the phone at work and have no interest in having a call automaticaly answered if I don't know who it is, and I have to wait for them to disconect.

The actual unit is taped down in the under seat tray towards the front.

I used the adhesive/velcro attachments for the speakers and mic in my full face helmets, but found that the heat would loosen the adhesive here in San Diego, so ended up stictching the speakers in. Have never had any issues with the mic.

Speakers are not spectacular, but they work well even at highway speeds.

My only caution is to be carefull with the conectors (to the helmet) it does not have an index so you can jam them in and bend the pins. I used a silver sharpie to color the arrows showing allignment, and tend to disconect at the helmet when I need to lock it up.

I will try to get some pictures next week when I am home and post for you.

I also have the same intercom, works just fine! I have both connectors at my handlebar. With a good helmet you will me able to chat at about 140 (Km/H) that is 87 Mp/h

So, can you use this type system with a earplug like the ER-6i? Really don't want to mess with speakers if I can avoid it.

I really only need intercom/music. No radio (and no plans for one) and using a phone on a motorcycle just doesn't appeal to me at all.

Intercom and music works just fine. You can also hook up your GPS system.

It has these options:

Driver Intercom
Passenger intercom
audio => music or GPS
Phone
Walkie talkie (dont know any other words in english for the device) for bike to bike comm.

Thanks Dutchie. Going to start some 2-up riding soon and I'm sure Momma is going to want to be a bit more advanced than bashing me on the helmet to let me know it's time for a pit stop.

I think it is a PERFECT system (for the money) in Holland it costs 150 euro.

The connectors helmet to MIT are to be gentle with. Try plugin in a few times, without gloves on to get the feel. I have been looking for a connector wich de Dutch police use on there bikes. It costs about 140 euro's. :shock:

Just the male and female connector that is!

Side note in response to the above posts.
  1. My newer MIT does not have the mini-Din connectors, it has the IEE1394 connectors. No pins to bend, you'd have to drive over these with a truck to screw them up.
  2. Thank you for the tip on the helment/velcro glue issue.
  3. I found a spot to tap in I think. It looks like an accessory for rear lights. It has 3 wires, ground, +12 V and some other wire.
