Question MPG under different conditions?????

Hello all, I've search the forums for information on MPG for both the 650 and the 1000 and did not find to much. I know mileage depends on how you ride and what your loads are. I've talked to some people who told me they can get 65 MPG on the wee-strom under fairly normal conditions. They say upper fifties to mid sixties are common for the 650. If you would like to comment please answer the following:

1. 650 or 1000 ??
2. MPG on average( or a range) Town vs highway??
3. How much wieght on the bike? (you, passengers/cargo)
4. Top speed obtainable with above loads at what RPM's

If MPG is important to you, you're better off with a 650.

My '07 DL650 ABS is averaging about 54 mpg with mixed highway / city streets riding, at about 1200 miles. I'm about 5' 10" & 180 lbs. with a tall GIVI windshield, a GIVI 52N top case, and handgrips - so a fair amount of wind-resistance up front. I rarely go above 70 as it's just too loud and there's too much buffeting for my comfort. In 6th the bike is about 4500 - 5000 at 70mph.

Averaged 53 mpg on the 2400 miles I did going to Reno. High was 56 at speeds 65 and under. Lowest was 49 when I was slabbing on I-5 at 70 to 75 mph for 250 miles. This is fully loaded with a Givi trunk, E21 saddlebags and a large duffle bag ( about 100 lbs.).

Mpg

1. DL650
2. 46.5 mpg – mixture of expressway and city driving.
3. I normally ride single, but am 6’5” and weight 300lbs+.
4. I run 65mph @ 4500rpm

* - All calculations above were made with my current 16T sprocket.

I’ve read several entries on MPG calculations and believe that rider weight and height(wind resistance) contribute greatly to MPG obtained. Just as a note, my bike runs beautifully.

I'm having a relaxed night so I'll answer in detail.
1. 05 650.
2. In town averages 54ish MPG when running a GIVI windshield, and speeds don't exceed 65mph. If I add soft luggage this number drops by 2-3mpg.
Between 30f-50f my gas millage drops to about 48 around town. I usually shift around 5-6000. Occasionally I'll shift at 8000. Rarely above that. Cruise around 4000.

On the highway with a givi windshield and bags I get 45mpg at a real 75mph (83ish indicated). If I lose the bags, I've gotten 49mpg at a real 80mph. However I've noticed if the temps are below 50f (I use heated gear) my mileage drops into the 40-43mpg range.

3. 150lb driver, with 30lbs of gear and cargo, and a top case with large hand guards and givi windshield. When using soft bags I've usually got another 30-40lbs of stuff.

4. Easy to get to a real 90mph. I don't go above that. Ask greywolf about going higher than 115mph without a steering stabilizer.... yuck

1.) 1,000! Secondaries pulled, K&N air filter, 43T rear sprocket, Givi windshield, Givi V46 top case.

2.a) Last weekend - Solo ride, open highway, averaging around 75 mph straight highway run, cruising in 6th = 54 mpg (imperial gallons) (45 mpg US)

2.b) This weekend - 2-up ride, secondary roads, averaging around 55 mph, some stop/starts, shifting between 4,000 & 7,000 rpm, cruising between 4,000 & 5,000 rpm, mostly 4th and 5th gear = 53 mpg (imperial) (44 mpg US).

3.a) 270 with luggage.

3.b) 410 with luggage

4.) Top speed? Who cares?

2007 DL 650 - still in the break in period. Had 56.67 mpg on the first tank of gas, and 58.85 mpg on the second. I drive a mixture of highway and city driving. While I might be babying it alittle, have had it up to 70 numerous times at about 5,000 RPM, generally keep between 3K and 5K RPM. About 240 lbs.

900mi. trip....

...two weeks ago I averaged 44.77mpg. Pretty good considering: Givi windshield, with Mastad bracket, Givi E52 top, E46 sides, 240lb rider, 25lbs gear, and 75-80mph the whole way.
