hyde skid/ bump cap/ thingy

So, I just bought a brand new 07 650. Had a heck of a time finding a grey one, anyway. After getting off a KLR I am stoked to say the least. One of my beefs is that oil filter, shiny pipe and oil cooler all out there in the open. Now let me explain I ride mostly pavement but I live an a dirt road and I enjoy the occasional gravel road. I would like a plastic kinda set up like on the KLR. But this hyde thing straps to the exhaust pipe and is expensive.

Now I have noticed the lack of frame down there. So I understand mounting issues. My thing with aluminum is this. If you were stepping into the box against Nolan Ryan, would you choose a plastic helmet or an aluminum one. Seems like aluminum skid plates transfer shock to the frame instead of absorbing it. I am not planning on driving steaks into the ground or parking on stumps. Will the fenda extenda thing solve most of my concerns? Can the 1000 skid plate cannot be modified to work?
