Vapor Lock?

I have a 2002 DL1000. I have made several long distance trips with the bike this year (500+ miles in single day) without any issues.
Today on a trip out of town, about 90 miles in, I went to make my first fuel stop and the bike stalled as I turned into the gas station. I coasted to the pumps (still had about 1 gallon left in the tank) and tried to restart the bike, it would not turn over at first. I also had a to make several attempts to find neutral (not normal). After about 10 minutes the bike did restart, but was idling way low (about 800 rpm) and would stall if I did not give it a little throttle. I decided to give it about 20 minute rest (while I had a snack), filled up the tank and the bike started to run normal again. About 30 minutes later when coming to a red light, the bike stalled on me again, it did restart without issue. Once restarted, I notice the idle would dip to 800, then return to normal. It did this the whole way home. Some lights, it would idle normal, sometimes it would idle low and 2x it stalled.
I do notice that whenever I park the bike, I get a real loud whistle coming from the cap. Stops when I pop open the cap. I replaced the cap but the same whistle can be heard when I park the bike at the end of a ride.

Any Ideas? Vapor lock due to the heat of 90+ miles on hot day? Plugs? P-U coil? Something more sinister?

Any feedback is appreciated ...

Throttle Position Sensor.

Textbook case. If we had a V-Strom textbook, anyway.

Order up a new TPS.

In the meantime, you can temporarily work around the problem when it happens by shutting the bike off and working the throttle 5 or 6 times. This seems to wipe off the contacts inside and gains you a little more time before the problem returns.

By "wouldn't turn over", do you mean that the starter wouldn't work?

You may also or instead have a bad battery and/or weak charging system or loose battery terminals.

Or perhaps that damn clutch switch or kickstand switch failed. These pretty much have a 100% failure rate...

Bang on!

Thank you so much!
I am pretty sure its the TPS - I was doing freeway riding on long stretch at 75+ for about 2 hours.

I have looked up a bunch of details on TPS since your suggestion and your right - spot on! Exactly my symptoms.

I'll get the part ordered and make a trip to Harbor freight for the tools.

13580-27G21 which replaces 13580-27G20.

Your a life saver Bwringer!

Dealer mode

I put the bike in dealer mode, hoping to C14 (bad TPS) but I got the C00.

Do you think I should try to adjust prior to ordering a new one based on this info? BUt the bike is idling correctly at the moment - will dealer mode not show the last error code like most cars do? Just current issues? Will I need to keep in dealer mode until I have the issue reoccur to confirm?

Typically, the TPS problem that causes your symptoms will not cause a code and will only malfunction when hot.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Thank you

Thank you Greywolf!

I just saw your post on another thread that says:
The stall after a long ride is a heat related TPS problem, not an adjustment. The adjustment is about getting a smooth throttle response over the transition. I'm not clear about how important the rpms are at the time of transition. If you have a stalling problem after a long ride, replace the TPS

My google fu still needs some work and thank you for answering questions you have already answered!

I will order a TPS and let Ya'll know if they are still on BO.
