Madstad shield bracket impressions on my 2007 Vee

I installed the newest Madstad (with plastic knowbs) and thought I would pass along some impressions. My bike is 2007 1K with stock shield.

The mounting instructions are not as clear as I would have liked. (Pictures or better diagrams would have helped). I chose the default (middle) mounting position which is probably the best for stock Vee shield.

It took me a little more than 45 minutes to install and a bit of cursing. The main problem was the brackets screw holes did not line up by 1/2" to the stock windshield holes. I had to bend the windshield horizontally to line them up. It was a pain in the neck and there could be a chance of scratches or snapping the shield. Also, I bolted the wrong holes on the windshield and had to remove them and do it again so I could fit the external stock plastic brackets.

The external plastic brackets are the last thing you put on. They don't hug the shield properly (due to the 1/2" bending I assume). But it is acceptable (if you dont mind cursing .

The windshield has the newer Plastic knobs whiich make it much easier to loosen and tighten by hand. One thing you should do is make sure the pivot/hinge screws are tight enough to allow you to slide the bracket up and down when knobs are loosened, BUT not loose so that the shield vibrates and possibly pivot back. Their manual says they set it at the factory at proper torque but that was not the case. Test them.

Once in place I took it for a highway spin to 90 miles an hour and some crazy crosswinds. It remained where I set it, and I didn't see or hear any vibrations. Does it cut the wind? I adjusted it high enough so I can see over the shield and yes it makes a difference. Its easy to move the shield to any position.

Overall it is worth having but I just wish they have better documentation. Also the brackets have their sharp edges pointed at the rider. If you crash forward they could be a hazard. Maybe they should supply with some plastic sheath to cover them.

that rifle setup is starting to sound better, based on evals i'm reading regarding madstad.

Went right over the handlebars and windscreen when Bambi attacked me at 50 mph last November and never came close to the windscreen. In fact, the Madstad and that old windscreen are now on the replacement DL650K7. I don't think it's an issue.

I just got a madstad bracket too, last weekend (5/6/2007), and I have the exact same issue with attaching the windscreen. I contacted them and Mark said the bend is a couple degrees too wide on this batch. He said that it should be easy for me to bend them a little, or that I could send them back to have him bend them for me. I'm gonna give it a try and if I can't do it as easily as he says I'll ship them back. If I were you i'd do the same, if you feel like your windscreen is being bent more than a little to match the bracket.

But it's a moderately small quality control issue and he's standing behind it, so I still think the positives of this product outweigh the negatives (from what I've read, anyway - haven't tried it yet. After the bending session I'll know for sure) ((and if Mark is correcting the bend before sending out any more, now that he knows about it)).

No you were lucky that's all.
The majority of riders that go over the handlebars cause damage to themselves (usually their knees) on the handlebars but the possibility of ripping my stomach open on the Madstad is one thing that stops one from being fitted to my bike.

It must be a "batch" issue, as my madstad fits my stock screen perfectly. The madstad was purchased Sept. 06 and is mounted on a K6 Wee. I upgraded from the wingnuts to the plastic knobs with the rail nuts. Nice touch for 6 bucks. Cleaner lines and easier adjustments.

Hmmm, bought mine last month, no issues at all with fitment. Oh, and it does have the plastic knobs. Great product IMO, and I really thing that if I'm going over the handlebars, I got much bigger issues than the madstad.

I bolted up my Madstad bracket to my '05 last year, and everything bolted up without a hitch.....just like the stock stuff.

Just got my Mad stad tues. and installed in less then 20 minutes without looking at the instructions. I'm 98% happy with the stock screen and the Madstad. With the plastic Knobs I have no trouble adjusting it on the go with gloves on.
