Power Port/Cig Lighter questions

OK. I got a new GPS and I want to hook it into the bikes power. It has a cig lighter attachment and I want to use that. I have been looking all over the place for a cheap car cig lighter too hook up under the seat and run the cable under the tank and too the handlebars. I dont need a fancy power port with addapter ($$$). I just want a cheap cig lighter. Does anyone know of a place I can buy one for cheap? Like an auto parts store in So-Cal?

Also, how would I go about wiring it up so that its only powered when the key is on or the bike is on? Thanks!

Yeah, WalMart is probably as good as any.

Depending on the GPS and power cord you can probably take the plug part off and wire it to the battery if desired. I did that with the adapter for my small GPS. Beware that some of them do have a voltage regulator in the plug. Mine did and I had to solder some wires onto the circuit board to be able to connect it. If you've never done any electronics soldering you might want to ask for some help as there isn't much room to work on a circuit board.

I was a PC tech for 15 years. I can handle it I will go find a Walmart and see what I can find. Thanks! Any idea on how to wire it up so its not always hot?

http://www.canyonchasers.net/shop/generic/relay.php shows how to set up a relay for a distribution block. If you only want a power port, it can do that instead. Use the brown wire in the sheath running on the left of the underseat tray for a trigger wire. It's hot when the ignition is on or in park. Any gray wire in the tail light area will work too.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

You aren't doing a distribution block though. It's just a standard SPST relay with a ground and trigger wire on the coil terminals. The power terminals complete the hot side of the power port.

The bike already has a fused, ignition on power connector behind the radiator waiting for heated grip leads. You could use that to connect a power port.

Normally you would want a GPS to be powered the whole time you are using it and that would include pit stops.
If all you are going to need the power outlet for is a GPS you don't really need it to be switched. You can get a variety of weather resistant cig style adapters at Wal-Mart etc. It is dead simple to wire one directly to the battery. Be sure to use an inline fuse.
The connection using a relay is not really hard either though. Just follow the steps outlined in the canyon chasers link. Its actually easier than it looks.

I would assume that if you were not riding you would remove the GPS and take it with you so you wouldn't have to worry about it draining the battery. Although a GPS would take quite awhile to drain a battery, it would probably get stolen first.

I have a weather proof socket under the seat. It is hot all the time so I can use the compressor anytime without the key on. Also fused to be safe.
