Paint jobs

It seems that my Wee is allergic to trailers.

Back in January, I had occasion to try to put my bike on a trailer (long story involving inane AZ DMV officials who wouldn't let my ride to my license test- finally resolved). It tipped over and I rashed up the right side fairing pretty badly.

Since then I've added SW-Motech crashbars (and centerstand, and bash plate, and a Superbrace, and finishing up my flush mount turn signals). But I've still got the issue of the body damage to consider.

I took the damaged fairing panel to the local custom paint shop. To my surprise, they were unable to match the paint. They were so frustrated they went to the DuPont Paints distributor's office, and borrowed a magic paint camera that's supposed to analyze paint and give a formulation to mix. The magic paint camera was stumped by the Suzuki red paint. Two weeks after I brought the guy the panel, no work has been done.

As it stands, I've got a few options:

1) buy a new fairing panel from Suzuki
2) ride with the damaged fairing, and eventually cover it with stickers
3) paint both fairings to match, in a color other than '06 Red
4) find a Suzuki shop who'll admit to having this shade of red, and who will sell me a quart or so at an insane price
5) paint some sort of design over the damaged area in a contrasting color.

Right now I'm leaning towards 2 (just to ride the bike). I haven't priced out 1 because the dealership was closed today, when the paint guy finally admitted to me that he was stumped.

3 intrigues me, and I'm playing around with paint schemes in my head- if I can find a free Photoshop-type program I'll play around with that. I'm kicking around 5 with a fair amount of seriousness, especially considering using retroreflective paint. Not sure if it's legal, but I've seen on here some folks have use reflective tape and stickers and such, so it shouldn't be any different than that.

Not being at all an artist, does anyone here have any ideas? Please?

Guess I should have been wearing pants...

Just let your bike fall on the others side, should match.

A new panel is around $150.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Update

Got quoted $184 for a new panel, from Sierra Cycle in Sierra Vista, AZ. The parts guy then gave me a phone number to a guy named Mike in Huachuca City. I discussed the paint with him in as much detail as I was able to get from the local body shop.

Evidently, '06 Red is a bright, orange-tinted red candy base, with purple and gold pearl mixed in. DuPont does not carry a base bright enough to match. Depending on the work done, and the costs involved, I'll post his contact info. Maybe I can talk him into keeping an '06 Red formulation handy that he can ship out to Troopers' paint shops.

As to going with non-stock paint....

I was quoted $100 max to shoot the one panel. The whole bike would start at around $400, on up to the thousands, depending on the paint I'd want.

Another idea I was kicking around was painting over the damaged areas in a contrasting color. The local paint shop is lobbying for metallic black with lots of red pearl, with medium red candy shot over that, and red pearl ghost flames over that. As fun as custom paint would be, I think I'd want to put more time and thought into a design than I've got available right now. Riding season is well under way and I'm still in my cage, trying to get this figured out! Custom paint will be a winter project.

Guess I should have been wearing pants...

Colorrite.com shows a base and top coat "Candy Sonoma Red" for the 2006 DL. It is expensive at $74.00 per 1/2 pint.

Would that suit a DL650? Ghost flames, and such, always strike me as cruiser things.

Yeah, and I've always looked down my nose at the day-glo green serpent-humping-dragon-with-demon-chick-watching paint jobs you see on so many of the custom bikes out there. I *do* want to do custom paint, but I think I prefer the look of the shark-mouth-decal I've seen on a few red Wees out there. If I got something like this painted on, I'd want to put something on the rear sidecovers that ties in with the design, and I'd want to put 3M retroreflective additive in the paint, to make it more visible at night. Probably a high-dollar paint job but it should look sharp, and be more visible at night.
