Trade my KLR for a DL1000..?

Going to check out a DL1000 with 60k miles on it, 2002, owned by engineer and in amazing condition mechanically/cosmetically. I've got a 2008 Kawasaki KLR650 with pretty much every commonly desired mod that i'm gonna value at $3800-4200. This guys asking price is $3900, and we've got a local bike shop (they want my bike, strom guy wants cash) as our middle man, so hopefully I can get a full service in with the trade. My goal is for a straight, no cash trade....

just looking for your guys' opinions before I go swap test rides tomorrow, assuming this bike is perfect, the mileage concerns me a little but I know this bike should be fine if taken care of, is this a decent deal?

IMHO, that is a little steep for a 2002. I paid $4500 for my '07 with 12000 mi, and that isn't an isolated deal.

Thanks, and i'm guessing a 2003 with 40k miles, exhaust and givi top case at 4200 is pushing it too then.. :P

The dl 1000 has plenty more issues than the 650. I have a 2007 Vee so im not blowing smoke.
Get a 650 for more trouble free miles.

You only hear from those with issues on the forum, not the ones that run perfect. My '07 has zero issues. One of reasons could be I do my own service work instead of relying on a dealer. I have to scratch my head when reading about the problems others have, and wonder why so many run perfect and others don't.

The real solution, of course, is to own both.

I'd agree that the DL1000 is priced a bit high, but perhaps not for that area of the country. The KLR price is a bit high as well, so it evens out.

Does either bike include hard luggage? Crash protection? Suspension upgrades? New tires? These are the expensive farkles that would affect used values.

The mileage is of no concern whatsoever, other than the shock is going to be completely worn out if it's still stock.

I'm gonna get a DRZ400 some time next year, KLR just frustrates me off road coming from 250s and 350s :P the KLR is farkled out like an idiot found his moms bank accounts, vstrom is in great condition and has two brothers pipes and a givi tail box.

Update: Selling my KLR to a friend-dealer for $3200 tomorrow morning, gonna go buy the strom around noon for $5100 total. Thats including tax, title transfer, registration, stealership fees, just need insurance... so, 4600ish.

A DRZ400 might frustrate you off-road as well. That's a heavy dirt bike.

It isn't a 250 2 stroke, but it will get the job done very well. DRZ is 115 lbs. lighter than the KLR, and 67 lbs heavier than a klx. I can go anywhere on my DRZ my KDX will go.

Smile DL1000 purchase price

I got my 2004 DL1000 in 2010 with 212 miles, no that is not a typo, for $3,500.00 The owner drove it home from the dealership and claimed it scared him, so he locked in the garage. I've put 10K on it, totaled it once, got $4,500 from the insurance company, bought it back, fixed and improved it considerably since then. Love this bike, will do an Iron Butt cert ride on it this season.
