Info on the 650

Hey everyone, I am currently starting my information gathering phase for the DL650. I currently have a Concours 14 that isn't going anywhere and I would like to get a second bike for fire roads and going places that the C14 can't go. The biggest reason is the fuel mileage, I might be getting med boarded from the Army and the job I have lined up will be a 230 mile trip each day. I have been doing some checking and saw that the wee strom can get upwards of 55 mpg. The best I have done on my C14 is 47 mpg but it is usually around 36-38 mpg since I have a problem with not being able to stay out of the throttle. I am also planning a trip to Prudhoe Bay in the next couple of years and this would be the perfect bike IMO to do that trip with my dad. Any info would be appreciated.

Trying to convince my wife that a 650 will save me a ton of money on fuel.......

What speed are you planning? A 2007 or later DL650 can get 55-60mpg at about 60mph if it is set up pretty bare. Go up to 75mph with a touring windshield and luggage and you'll get about 40mpg.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

I regularly get about 260-270 miles per tankful on my 2006 Wee - sometimes all freeway, sometimes a mix of backroads and/or slab for my commuting purposes, per my mood. Usually when I refill, it's about 5 gallons +/-.......I'm too afraid to go much further, but figure I have almost half a gallon left to go before the fuel pump seizes!

I have noticed that at over 75mph, the fuel economy really takes a ding at 80+ mph cruising speeds.

Realistically you'll get maybe 20% better mileage.

4600 miles a month at 40mpg is 115 gallons.
4600 miles a month at 50mpg is 92 gallons.

Payback is gonna take awhile.

OTOH, nothing wrong with having more bikes Mine survived the trip to Prudhoe a few weeks ago. Then again, my buddy's VFR made it too, so I'm sure the Connie could make it too.

IF I had a Connie I would get a true dual sport , not a DL650.

I read your buddy's RR on ADVrider, and I loved his title about an idiot riding with two dual sports.

My route to and from work will be all backroads except for about 20 miles of 4 lane. The fuel mileage is just what I will be using to convince my wife that I need a second bike, I really just want a dual sport and the 650 seems to fit the bill nicely.

Trying to convince my wife that a 650 will save me a ton of money on fuel.......

I think it will work well for me, since it will be on pavement at least 90% of the time. Forest service roads and my trip to Alaska will be about at adventurous as I will get with my bike.

I've had other people try to convince me of the C-14's respectable gas mileage, but I've always been skepticle.

Even with the econo fuel mode, sounds like it's pretty hard for most riders to stay off the throttle and get those good numbers.

My guess is that you would be more likely to miss the power of the C-14 than to not see a significant improvement in gas mileage, particularly if you can get used to cruising at <= 60mph like Greywolf says.

With all that said, I admit to a certain attraction to the C-14, but the gas mileage, heel-under-butt riding position, and questionable affordability and availability of certain aftermarket parts(such as a tall enough windscreen) makes it seem unlikely that I would ever own one.

Gas mileage is the key to making a motorcycle compariably cost-justifiable when compared to my 4-wheel vehicle, which is something I insist on in a motorcycle.

I figured if I had a 650 that the lack of power compared to my C14 would make me less likely to ride it like a hooligan while on back roads. Maybe I just need to ride my C14 with a little more throttle discipline.

Trying to convince my wife that a 650 will save me a ton of money on fuel.......
