Dual sparkies ?

I've very much caught the "I need a Wee" bug, and have been researching various used options around me (Austin, Tx). There are a few available from a range of years, which brings me to my question:

The only major change I'm aware of (apart from ABS availability) in the Wee's history is the move to two spark plugs in 2007. Does that help efficiency or performance in a meaningful way, or was that primarily just to pass emissions standards in some place that I'm not?

Dual plugs are for emissions. The side benefit is improved fuel economy and the cost seems to be a little power, though I haven't seen a dyno comparison.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

So, my 2004 makes a bit more power but looses a little mpg compared to the dual sparked later Wees? Interesting.

hmmm, less power, better mileage.

So, that seems to mean the two plugs make better use of the fuel, but without timing or fuel map changes, I could imagine how a loss of torque could occur - the 2nd plug making its own flame front means the timing could be too early. But, I would think that would lead to lower mileage. I really don't understand engine tuning stuff that well

So this bike's really not changed much at all over the years. Rumors of the 2012 one will be interesting. I'll buy the old Wee's from someone who upgrades

The plugs are not well situated for a faster burn. The second plug only cleans up the mixture at the periphery of the combustion chamber while the first remains centered. It takes the same amount of time for the flame front to reach the side opposite the second plug. I can't tell you how bummed I was the two plugs weren't positioned symmetrically. Based on results though, the arrangement works fine on the leaner mixtures of the later bikes.

OK - that makes sense. So, the "main" plug on the 2007's is basically where the single plug is on the 2006's. I guess that made the change easier on Suzuki, but it sure does seem that it's a less than ideal setup.

I guess the bottom line is that the dual plug setup is really only important for folks in areas where the emissions laws require such a thing. So, I can get an older Wee without feeling like I'm missing anything.
