Looking for a little input...

I'm looking seriously at buying a V-Strom 1000. My current bike is a Kawasaki ZRX1200, which I enjoy alot, but the lady in my life is not comfortable on it despite the Corbin GF/L and backrest that I bought, so the ZRX is moving to a new home. We've looked at Concours and cruisers(gag) and I'm pretty much leaning toward the V-Strom. There are several that I've called about, and I was wondering what your take is on these, seeing that you all have experience with the big V.

1. an 02 with 27350 mi., high windshield and heated grips.. advertised @$4600, guy said he'll take $3500 over the phone.

2. an 03 with 19500, Givi bags, trunk, engine guards, high windshield, driving lights. $5k "But make me a cash offer"

3. an 08 with 2000 miles, Givi bags, stock and gel seat, 2 stock and Suzuki accessory high windshield, centerstand. givi engine guards, $6500 and he's pretty firm... This bike is only about 10 miles from me...


How many of you do alot of 2-up time on your Vee??? Her comfort is the whole reason for this exchange.
I also spend a good bit of time riding with my son and some friends (all on sportbikes) backroading and generally going way too fast... I'm hoping that the DL will be capable of keeping up there.. any thoughts???

I'm inclined to go for the newest bike with the lowest mileage and hope that it's all that... But the other two are considerations because of the cost...
Should the mileage on the other bikes concern me???

My wife says the V Strom is way more comfortable than the VL1500 Cruiser I traded in for it. We routinely do LONG rides together and usually I am the sore one cause with her on I ride more towards the narrow front of the seat....
I would suggest you think on what kind of ridiing you are going to be doing the most, cause if it is all highway slab and twisties with no off road or gravel tours The Concours might be a better touring machine, but in my opinion if you want the best SPort touring option out there short of the big Beemers.. it is the Honda ST1300 or the older 1100's.... solid Shaft drive, amazing comfort, comes set up with factory hard bags, and has Honda reliability...
I bought the V strom cause I want to ride forest service roads up to the top of Mountain lookouts....

I guess that I forgot to mention that we live in a rural area and I'm looking forward to the possibility of cruising the back roads,( some of them un-paved) this fall.

I've had my Vee on gravel single lane, no problem. Just something to get used to. I gave $7000 for an '07 w/ full givi and engine gaurds, so that seems reasonable against book price. I'm suprised you found that many close. When I got mine, there wasn't another within 500 miles. IMO, I'd go the '08 if it's the color and all.

Lot of goodies on the 08. The Strom can be outfitted to shine on the backroads.

The Vee and the Wee are pretty much the same bike, cept for a few minor things....but, as far as passengers go - Identical situation.....my wife seems to think it's just a great place to enjoy the fun. I do believe the top case has a lot to do with her digging the passenger accommodations.

With the addition of a passenger backrest to the bike, my wife now really enjoys riding on ours. Of course it's only a 650 - but that's fine with us. Really a very comfortable bike. The backrest made a huge difference for her.

Well, we went over and looked at the 08 yesterday afternoon, and took a quick (probably 6 or 7 mile test ride). It's like brand new. I'm really into the bike, She's a little shaky... She didn't "feel secure" on it, and doesn't like the climb up onto the passenger pegs. Probably didn't help that she stumbled getting off of it after her first time on board... She got her foot caught momentarily on the saddlebag, and we hadn't even heard it RUN yet... Says that she likes the ride height of the Vulcan or Roadstar better.

(Oh hell. I want a cruiser about like you all wanna DIE)...

She did allow that it's way more comfortable than the Rex, and as comfortable as the cruisers. I countered that the only difference is that everythings about 5 inches higher on the Vee, and that she could just as easily get into trouble with the bags on the other bikes. Plus, I told her that we'd either put a topcase on it, or at the very least a backrest for her...

Dunno just yet, but I'm hoping that she will see the light.

I may be 51 , but I doubt that I'll ever be old enough for floorboards and all that chrome.

Oh, the fellow who owns the bike is a really nice guy, and in the process of talking about the Vee, we also told a few "war" stories, and I alluded to some of the insanity that I've gotten into over the years (and still do) riding with my kid and his buds.... During the conversation, we talked a little about careers....Turns out he's a State Cop.

Gulp.

Do ya think he'll cut me some slack someday if I get busted while riding his old bike?????
Somethin' to think about....

I want this bike.

My wife flat out told me that under no circumstances were we ever going to sell or get rid of the Pacific Coast after her first ride on the back of the Wee. She loves the Pacific Coast (have a Corbin seat on it). We will see if she changes her mind after I get the seat on the Wee fixed (replaced, modified, etc). It will also need passenger peg relocationt as the pegs are too high for her and it hurts her knees (it is a bitch getting older).

How do you plan on doing that, Doug?? ARe peg relocatoers available for the V or are you planning some fab work?
