New Strom Owner Ride Report for the V-Curious

Since I'm a newer Strom owner, I thought I would put together a little ride review for those that are considering purchasing a wee/vee.

First of all I will tell you that I'm in my 40's, rode dirt-bikes when I was young and got back into motorcycles last year (my wife calls it my mid-life crisis). My first bike was a 2002 Kawasaki Vulcan 500 (cruiser) I purchased last year. That will be my comparison bike.

I purchased my wee from a Stromtrooper last December. It's a 2007 with 51,000km's (30,000 miles) on it. I was a little concerned about the mileage on it when I first looked at it, but since looking at this site and some of the mileage on their bikes, I thought it would be okay and I was right. I think it runs as well as a new one. I wouldn't hesitate to take it on a long trip. If you take care of it, it will take care of you.

I've put 160km (100 miles on it). Been fairly crappy spring weather up here in Ontario. My first impression of it when I started out was that this is a big bike! Keep in mind I'm comparing it to a 28" seat height cruiser. It took a few stops and starts to get used to the upright seat position and the shift being in a different location. After a few miles, it was easy and natural to shift.

The one thing I really love about this bike is the seat height. I'm 6'1" with a 32 inch inseam. I don't feel cramped at all on the bike. And if you believe it or not, I find the wee easier to ride than the old cruiser. Your knees fit perfectly beside the tank. Along with the seat height is that you are sitting up higher than on a cruiser. How high up you ask? I was sitting at a light beside a pick-up truck and I could look him right in the eye. I guess to compare it's like going from a car to a pick-up / van / suv.

Now on to the power! I'm very pleased with the acceleration of the bike. Mind you I'm coming from a 500cc carb engine. The other thing that became very apparent quickly is that I didn't have to shift constantly. That's one of the things I didn't like about the Vulcan was I was constantly shifting up and down with city driving. The wee can go 60km (40 miles) a hour no problem in 3rd. I would be in 5th on the Vulcan. I will say that this bike likes to run around the 5000 + rpm range. It seems to lag (complain) when it's lower than that.

I have read some threads about the brakes, but I don't have a problem with them. Maybe I'm just used to crappy brakes, but they do the job. I don't use the rears near as much as the front and they feel firm and not soft. (My opinion).

Today I was out for a ride in some fairly high cross-winds (50km hour - 30 miles). I found myself being blown around a little more than on the cruiser. I do have a fork brace installed. It might be the Givi top and side cases that catch the wind or maybe I just have to get used to driving a taller bike in the wind.

As for comfort, my lower back would start barking after a half an hour on the cruiser. I was on the wee for over an hour with no problem. That's with the stock seat. The gel seat is still in the basement.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the bike and I have not problem recommending the wee to anyone looking for this style of bike. I hope this helps those who are curious about these bikes.

I will add one other thing. If you do decide to buy one, make sure you use this site. There are some GREAT people on here. Two examples are Greywolf and Black Lab. You can take any bolt off of your bike, show it to Greywolf and not only will he tell you where it goes, he will give you the torque value too! And Black Lab, who takes pictures of everything he does to his bike, uploads the pictures and gives step by step instructions on what he is doing. His knowledge in invaluable when it comes to these bikes.

P.S. Use the Google search to find stuff rather than the other search engine. It works much better.

Steve
