Price check on a '05 DL650 w/ 28K miles & a few farkles for $3499 (list)

[Edit: 2/6/11; Bought it for $3400; my first Strom!]

Hi folks:

Still on a quest for my first Strom. Looking hard at one on craigslist. SUZUKI 650 VSTROM They say they're firm at $3500 which is under KBB; but I'd totally hit this if I could get it for $3,000, or even $3,100.

My questions for you:
1) What are your thoughts? Wait? Buy?
2) And if you'd buy, what would your max price be?
3) Also, since this bike is about 2 hours away and I'd prefer not to go there unless I was actually going to buy it; can I do this kind of negotiation on the phone? Am I missing any important questions to ask?

Here is craigslist details:
2005 Suzuki V-Strom, 28,000 miles, new tires, Givi Monokey Hardcase carrier, Extra tall windshield, Excellent Condition. Includes all gear for medium woman: leather pants, Rocket jacket with zip lining and outer shell, heated gloves, Shoei Helmet w/clear and tinted shield, etc

Here are questions they responded to via email:
0) What's the mileage on the bike? - 28K
0.5) Does the bike have ABS? No
1) When could I test drive it? (I do have a WA endorsement). What would you need ot see for a test drive (I have gear and such). Yes, with a $3500 deposit.
2) Any mechanical problems with the bike? Would you mind if my friend who knows motorcycles test drove it too? And perhaps taking it by a dealer to check it out? No problems, no problem
3) Do you have the title for it? Is title clean or re-built? I have a clean title, and am the original owner
4) Has it been dropped? yes but turn signal has been replaced
5) Are you negotiable on price? What's the lowest you could take? $3500 please visit 2005 Suzuki DL650 V-Strom 650 Motorcycle Retail Value & Price - Kelley Blue Book for value without all the extras
7) What's your phone number so we can discuss this in more detail? Edit: Phone number deleted
8) How much did you purchase the bike for? I'm the original owner
10) I'm guessing you're the second owner? No
11) What was the mileage when you bought the bike? 0
11.5) How much in accessories did you put on it? bigger windshield, softer seat, givi monokey case as shown in pictures
12) Can you tell me what type of riding you've done on the bike? 30 miles each way to and from work
13) Do you have the bike's VIN, so I can run some background checks on it? Edit: VIN deleted
14) Do you have any service records? If so, can you email those? I've done all the manufacturer's recommended maintenance.
15) After how many miles did you change the oil? What you'd replace it with? I had the dealer do it every 3000 miles, as recommended. Don't know what type of oil the dealer used.
16) What kind of gas did you use? The manufacturer recommends regular unleaded so that is what I used.
17) How much tread is left on the tires? Tires have less than a couple of hundred miles on them, as does the battery too.

Edit:
Craigslist link, phone number and VIN deleted.

I think it's a decent but not great deal. If it's in good shape it's a lot of bike for that money. But, you can always try to talk them down a bit. Wave $3200 at them and see what they do.

Is the bike close to home? a Wee with 28K is new. Are you going to quibble over 200 dollars. I would buy that bike for 35 in a heartbeat. If I were the seller of that bike I would not take the beating that some buyers issue. He has a Wee in the NW. some one is going to buy that bike soon. GRAB it before I do & send it to my friends house in Oregon so I have A BIKE TO RIDE OUT THEIR THIS SUMMER.

Considering you will need $300-400 in tires and battery immediately, that is has been dropped, that it has 28000 miles, I would say not a great deal at all for $3500 fixed for a DL650.

I have an o5 with 50 on the clock. I would burn it in the drive way before someone bought it for 3 K

I just paid $3,100 for an 06 with 32,xxx miles in December. Pretty well farkled, but dropped a couple of times. Damage is light and cosmetic, bike itself pretty well maintained and clean. It also needed tires. From the very little research I did beforehand, I thought this was a pretty good deal. So a couple hundred more might not be a deal breaker.

They say the battery and tires only have a couple hundred mile son them. What would your offer be to them?

I'm a little confused about what you mean. Do you mean that $3k is over priced or under priced for the bike I'm looking at?

I think he meant you'd be getting a good deal and that he'd never let his go for that low. He'd burn it to spite a lowball offer.

You've been searching for a while now, talking with people, checking ads. What kind of feeling did you get from the owner when you talked on the phone? Easy going, open, forthcoming, or kind of not giving you much info? Because he/she kind of hedged on some of your e-mail questions. You asked for maintenance records and he didn't say he had them, he just said all scheduled services have been performed. He doesn't know or won't say what oil the bike has been running on. Maybe he doesn't really know. Maybe you talked about some of this on the phone and it's okay.

I assume you get the original seat and windshield. What kind of seat is the new one? If it's a Russell or Sergeant or Corbin, that would add value. If it's a no-name whatever, it doesn't, and you might want the original seat on instead. New tires and battery are a plus. New tires are a $200 to $300 value, depending on the brand.

I bought an 05 with 16,825 for $4k. It has SW-Motech racks and Givi E41 side cases, a Cee Bailey windshield, and heated grips. It was also dropped once with only some scuffing on one mirror and a rear blinker that needed replacing (PO gave me a new one that he hadn't put on yet). Other than that, it's in excellent condition. Might need tires in the next thousand miles.

To me $3500 seems maybe a BIT high for a 28k bike, but I don't know what the market is up there. Down here in So Cal that bike would likely sell pretty quick in the spring if not right now. I feel like I got a good deal on mine and I think the PO feels like he made a good sale.
