Price check: '07 DL650 with 5500 miles; $5400 (but negotiable) with $1500 in farkles

Bike has 5500 miles on it.

Seller is asking $5400 but I spoke to him and he said he could lower it to $5000 and take $200 as there is a crack off the windshield (that he says hasnt grown); so I think I can get it for $4800.

Here are his farkles:
Givi engine guards
SW-Motech skid plate (a must have for any v-strom)
K&N air filter
California Science windshield
12 volt outlet
GPS docking station
6 port electrical connection power plate
Cortech Tail bag
Fieldsheer side and top bags
$100 service manual

One kink is that he says its a salvaged title because it was stolen and then sold at auction when a dealer bought it; and then sold it to him for $5900; and he has state patrol info to prove it. He put 4000 some odd miles on it and changed oil every 2-3K miles; using only premium gasoline. Claims he spent $1500 on his farkles.

My questions for you:
1) Do you think this is a good deal, and I should pull the trigger on it, or should I wait it out? I feel it's a fair deal; especially considering the lack of available used V-Stroms. I do see a used DL1000 for $3200 but it has a salvaged title and it's not clear why.
2) Do you have any other thoughts on the V-Strom? I did a lot of research on the Versys/BMW GS/V-Strom/KLR; and it seems like the V-Strom is a good bike for what I want (80% street; 10% touring, 10% off road to trailheads/mountain roads / logging roads etc).

About me: I'm 6'6; and I currently have a Ninja 500R and I'm looking to move up to a bike that fits me better. Also I've only been riding motorcycles for 6 months.

too much for salvage title bike

IMO, that's way too much money for a salvage title bike. I bougt a showroom 07 650 ABS 1600mi w/ bars, skid, shield for $5.5k.

Searchtempest.com is your friend.

'07 DL650A - crash bars, skid plate, centerstand, calsci screen, madstad, bestem 2012 trunk, fenda-extenda, handguards, heated grips, grip puppies

Regardless of price the salvage title would concern me. The VIN can be searched and should result in a title.

Most salvage titles are due to bikes being wrecked and totalled by the insurance company, then bought back by their owners. I redid a Honda I wrecked.

Now some totals are only cosmetic and some are structural. If you are not skilled enough to tell the difference, I'd go for a clean title. It doesn't take much damage to total a bike with the high replacement parts prices.

P.S. - I had to about give away my Honda with the salvage title due to buyer concerns...no biggie, it still paid off to rebuild it.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the advice. its a DL650.

I kinda want to pull the trigger because I don't really have a motorcycle after this weekend.

I can (and probably should) have someone who is well versed in motorcycles and motorcycle repair check it out with me.

And if the bike was simply stolen (i.e. not totaled) but is structurally sound, would you pull the trigger? At what price? How much does the title discount it?

Best,
David

The used/low mileage stroms are hard to locate but I would haggle to the mid 4000 range. A bent frame would be impossible to "see" and requires partial disassembly and careful measurements to verify.

Good part is, the strom frame is very rigid and would take a good lick to bend. A nice test ride with lots of turns by an experienced rider would likely show frame issues...know anybody you trust who is a gear head?

Salvage Title........

Do your homework (for your state......most are all different) on how to get a Clean Title after a bike is given a Salvage Title. Here in Alabama, it's a PITA to get it changed from Salvage to Rebuilt. Someone with a Rebuilder's License must sign off on a bunch of documents.......you must have receipts of all the parts replaced, yadda, yadda.........not worth all the headaches, to me. Like I said, all states are different..check with your State's DMV for specifics FIRST!!!!

The bike title is re-built not salvaged if it makes a difference. Does it?
[Edit] So apparently there is no difference in the state of Washington. And once a bike has a rebuilt title; that branding will never come off of it.
