Consider a salvage title for a first bike??

I have discovered the Wee's fit me perfectly in comfort and also purpose. I want a bike to cruise to a forest service road, and hit a campsite. Long term I want to get good enough riding to do cross country and expedition trips.

Been looking at bikes and saving up for one. I already have riding gear, so that part of the budget is taken care of. Most bikes seem to fall into the 3-4k range, but I found this one:

2004 Suzuki DL650 vstrom

It is cheap enough for me to pick up now, but buying a salvage title bike worries me a little. I am very mechanically inclined on cars and trucks, but not bikes. It sounds like a couple things are wrong, but I can easily fix those. The ugly part is ok, and it is appealing for a beginner bike.

Is insurance any higher on salvage bikes? Any things I should specifically look for?

God it is a small world. That is Drew's bike. He is a great guy and I'm sure the bike is just fine. It's not like he bought it last week and is flipping it to you or whomever. It is super easy in GA when it comes to salvage titles, but that don't matter as that title is already rebuilt. They don't cost more to insure. There is a chance your Ins co will not insure it, that chance is very slim though. Call them and get a quote.

Thanks, based on the craigslist ad it sounded like the guy had rebuilt and rode it, which makes me feel better. Since I now know that story is real I would probably be fine with it. Looks like most of the problem parts can be bought off ebay (bars worry me the most).

I will have to email my insurance agent on it.

What is Drew's username? I would like to shoot him a message on here about it.

He is known on the local GA boards. He goes by PandoraTracy, he is not on here that I know of.

If you are going to move or resell, I'd be cautious. Fixing it isn't the problem, it's registering it and reselling it.

SV650 track bikes are often bought as salvage bikes. Depending on the state and damage, you may never be able to get a road title for it.

The going rate for a salvage title bike around here is just about half of one with a road-going title.

I looked at a bike from Maine, and although it had a "rebuilt" title in Maine, to register it in Massachusetts I would have had to bring the bike and all the supporting receipts for parts to a state inspection station.
