Buy newer or nicely farkled older Wee?

Howdy, first post here and this has probably come up before, but I'm looking at various Wee's for sale and have seen really nice, low mile new ones with no farkles and slightly higher mileage ones with various stuff (skid plate, crash bars, hand guards, luggage, etc...) that I will need to put on the bike anyway. I'm an experienced rider and I plan to take her off-road for sure. What would you do? I know the add-ons add up in hurry. Thanks for your input.

As long as the additions are what you want and there is a maintenance history, more miles are fairly unimportant. The bike should do 100,000 miles and more with proper care.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s
See https://www.stromtrooper.com/general-...nicknames.html

Please vote in the poll on what Strom(s) you have at https://www.stromtrooper.com/informat...-you-have.html

+1 Mine had 30,000 on it when I got it... I've added about another 3500 so far, and have had no problems. Mine had all the farkles I would have put on, except the MadStad bracket. I'm still debating about Givi luggage.
All indications, including testimony from WAY more experienced Wee riders is that you should expect 100k miles from them, easily.

I'm in the same shoes you are Brad. I'm planning on finding a higher mileage bike with some farkles and then customizing from there. Seems like a lot of good deals this time of year on used bikes with 30,000+ on them.

I'm thinking along similar lines as WY wanderer . . . hey, you're from Jackson! Greetings from Laramie! Anyway, brad21, you probably already made a decision, but here's my 2 cents. I'm relatively new to motorcycles and especially the V-Stroms, but this is more about machinery, depreciation, and package deals. If the low-mile ones you are talking about are brand new, sitting on the dealer floor, then you're probably looking at losing quite a bit (in my case, 2K) just driving it off the lot. A used one in excellent condition, or even with some cosmetic damage but mechanically sound, isn't going to lose value as quickly. Plus from everything I've read these things are built solid and low-maintanence (except perhaps for the clutch basket and some often overlooked aspects of tuning). Except for the "chudder" issue (which seems to occur more in the Vees anyway), most posts I've read about these bikes say they run strong and dependably for at least 50K+ miles without maintenance issues aside from factory scheduled and minor tuning. And farkles already present on the bike should add much less to the cost of the bike than buying all those farkles seperately, so you are probably going to "make out like a bandit" on those. And some of those farkles that you don't want you might be able to sell on Ebay or another site and make up some of the bike's cost.

Of course, if you plan to keep this bike for a long time and use it heavily, the new one might be a better option as it will give you more lifetime before the mechanicals do start to fail.

To explain why I'm even blabbing in this thread, I recently made the decision to look for a used Vee in the area. Local dealer found a new '09, but with shipping and set-up wants full MSRP. I'm not fond of losing 2000 dollars in value off the lot as I have never owned a Vee and might decide it isn't me. I found several promising used options in Northern Colorado, including someone in Denver with a used '07 farkled up for quite a bit less than blue book. I'm planning this weekend to check out if there's a good reason for the low price, and if I want to ride it home.

Same here guys (oh, hello everybody!). I stumbled across an '04 DL650 (at a Ducati dealership) here in Fort Worth. I LOVE it! Didn't hear it run, nor ride it yet, but....Somebody really rode the dickens outta the thing! Over 80k miles. Looks near a Rat bike. Not completely trashed, but lots of pock/rock marks, scratches etc. No major damage I could see and the dealer hadn't cleaned the bike up yet! (he claims they just got it).
The good--it had NEW tires, new chain, oil looked good. It has the upper engine guards, rear guards, skid plate (and you've gotta see this thing, it's a monster-scary lookin plate!
All black, windscreen could use replacing, that's about it. They are asking $2200.00. I'm thinkin about goin for it. I had a beemer F650 several years ago. Any input greatly appreciated!!

Thread Necromancy

Ha! I was looking for a Strom awhile ago, ended up with a 2001 Tiger. Anywho, sold the Tiger a few years ago and now have a Wee Strom.

Been a member for a long time, but don't have enough posts to put up a Sargent seat for sale. Bike came with what I think is a 1000 seat which fits my butt better. Anyone want a Sargent? PM me...

I would rather go for a newer bike (3-5 years old) with very low mileage (since I put quite few thousends of miles a year). If it comes with some farkles fine, but if not no problem. It's a fun to do it on your own. If you look for used stuff there is a lot of it around and specialy for the first generation.

I'd think you can find a bike with half those miles and in better general condition for just a bit more than the $2200. Personally, I'd look some more or possibly offer no more than $1500 for that 80K miles Wee.

2007 Wee. Blue. Bought at 5K miles. Sold at 32K+ miles. Gone but not forgotten.

2012 Wee2 Adventure. Black. Bought at 26K miles. Now 46K+. Love it!

I am trying to decide between a new 2014 wee for 8500 otd and a 2013 with nice trunk, engine guards, center stand with 7700 miles for 7100 otd. Leaning toward the latter but its a 2 hr drive each way and $90 in ferry fees due to the trailer.

Any opinions?

Thanks
Greg
