Demo rides?

How do you guys manage to get demo rides of V-Stroms? The dealer in my area doesn't offer demo rides last time I checked. I've bought my last 2 bikes just based on reviews and sitting on them.

I'd really like to demo ride both the 650 and 1000; or at least one them. Do most dealers just offer demos and mines just not that nice? I know the Triumph dealer near here does offer demos.BMW as well.

Seems like the Jap bike dealers don't offer demo rides unless you happen to catch one of their 'Demo Days'. That's how it is for me locally. Try to hook up with a local stromtrooper for a demo and no sales pitch*.

* Scratch the no sales pitch bit depending on who you hook up with. You wouldn't hear a peep out of me unless you asked.

Harley dealers allow test rides.

Maybe you can find one at a Harley dealer which was traded in on a Softtail...........................Oh, wait, that'll never happen.

There is a dealer in Asheville, NC who allows test rides.

Also, maybe you can find a rental, and take the bike for a half day.

Umm, I'll have to disagree with you on that one Norm, that's exactly how I got my Wee, at a Harley dealer where someone had traded it in. Odd thing is though, they would have let me test ride one of their 'hogs' but would not allow me to ride the Suzuki. Maybe they thought that if I test rode a Harley I'd want to leave with one of those instead. Now, that will never happen.

For the record though, none of the Jap bike dealers around here will allow test rides either but HD will and the one BMW dealer I went to let me take an F800S out for a good 30 minute ride, no questions asked, just a copy of my driver's license and sign their agreement and off I went. Maybe it's because they just don't want to let some run of the mill squid ride their high powered sport bikes and don't want to bother having to explain to them why that [more mature] guy over there just got back from a test ride on a less lethal bike but they can't go for a ride. That whole 'good suffering for the bad' thing.

I'm not sure what the story is abroad but I will share what I know about Canada.

Dealerships used to offer group rides and test drives on all makes and manufactures of motorcycles. Then one season (I forget the year) there was an abnormal amount of test drives that ended in fatal accidents.

Insurance for dealerships is paid monthly, and jumped from ~$2000 per month to ~$20,000 per month. It simply became impossible for dealerships to cover the price of insuring test drive vehicles.

This is also probably due to no "Suzuki Canada" or "Suzuki America" dealerships. Up here they are all smaller mom and pop shops which can't cover the cost.

The Honda Powerhouse chain in Canada will offer test drives with a $1000 deposit. However, They probably make it back with the sale of one or two GoldWing sales + services.
Other than that you have to go to a Manufacturer Demo day which is usually during work hours for most folks .

I jumped from my GS500F to a DL650 based on reviews and sitting on it. It was a huge gambol for me but it paid off. I am SO very pleased with the DL650.

If the bike fits you, I don't think anyone can go wrong with either VStrom.

When I was calling around for test rides, I found a dealer that was willing to let me ride a Wee, but they didn't have any. Another dealer I called said, laughing, "You're never gonna find anyone to let you test ride a V-Strom."

Then I got lucky and found two people I work with who have Wees, one with ABS and one without. Going to test out the ABS version tomorrow, in fact!

I too had hoped to test drive either bike before my purchase & I was told that I could sit on one that was already purchased by another customer. I took a chance & went with a 650 & sold it for the 1000. Tough bike to test ride except if you have a nice buddy......

Do what you love, & do it often.

I would never buy a bike without a test ride...ever. If all potential new bike purchasers took this philosophy, all dealers would offer test bikes. They are training buyers not to expect test rides and unfortunately a lot of bikers are accepting of this bs.

I agree with Maxblack. No test ride, no deal. My dealer actually let me test ride 4 different bikes; including the V-Strom. He even let me take a Triumph Sprint home for the weekend! I bought a Triumph Daytona 600 from him back in 2005 and he's treated me like gold ever since.

When life gives you lemons, keep them because, hey, free lemons!
