DL650 right for me?

Just wondering if the DL650 is the right bike for me.

I currently ride a WR250X. I've had it for about 2 years and 12k miles and most of the time absolutely love the thing - it's so responsive and quick, just like riding a mountain bike at 70mph.

The problem is, it's like riding a mountain bike at 70mph. I frequently take it on day rides of 200-300 miles and stick to exclusively VERY twisty minor roads. Take the X out on the freeway or even a normal two-lane highway, wick it up to 70, and it feels like I'm getting the crap kicked out of me after a couple miles. It's quite unpleasant for anything more than a few minutes. I think that the combination of turbulence from other vehicles, very twitchy steering, and the 2x4 seat make anything even remotely resembling straight-line riding at 60+ mph a less than rewarding experience. As long as I can devise a route that sticks to the curves, it is actually very comfortable and an amazing amount of fun.

However, I can't always and don't always want to have to come up with these crazy circuitous routes. I'm hoping for something that makes the less-than hairpin filled roads a little bit more fun, comfortable, and even (dare I say) relaxing?

I'm planning to keep the X for my hooligan bike, but am looking for something that's a little more realistic for eating up a lot of miles in a day, occasionally carrying a passenger, handling easy dirt/gravel roads, has good fuel range, and making 70+mph in a straight line a little bit more fun.

It's silly to come on a Strom forum and ask this question. I think I already have the answer. Just wanted to see if there were any other bikes that might fit my criteria better, get the thumbs up that I'm headed in the right direction, and introduce myself to the forum.

a Wee-Strom would be a good choice for you. It's not a big dirt bike, but it does have a lot more versatility on less than perfect roads than all but a handful of street bikes. I have a WR450 and it's NOTHING like my wee, but that's ok, they're two very different but equally enjoyable toys. Well actually my strom is more enjoyable if I had to pick one.

If you haven't ridden a DL yet, keep in mind it's gonna be, and will feel alot heavier, 'specialy up top. It's not gonna flick like the X or slide into the corners near as easy. It'll be harder to control at slower speeds, etc. It's no enduro. The suspension is not near as compliant as the X, but better than most road bikes its size. It's basically a big fat pig compared to the X, and will act as such.

With all that said, it is a good compromise for a more comfortable, longer range ROAD bike compared to the X. I do 500+ mile day trips with 75% twisties all the time on mine.

Find one to ride before you decide, and you'll have your answer.

Thanks for the replies guys. Glad to see I'm pointed in the right direction.

Yeah, I haven't had a chance to ride one yet. Just sat on a couple and indeed, they felt much heavier than my current bike.

Funny, I'm in the opposite camp. I have the wee and have been looking for a used x or r to try out. The plan with the wee was to do some back roads riding and work up to the tat. With the economy, I'm working insane hours and wont be getting any large amount of time off anytime soon. The smaller wr250 seems like the perfect ride for the poorly paved and dirt roads around home. Its just the 250 thing that worries me. I need a test drive.

The 250 is not a problem on back roads.

Since my original post I've done some more thinking about this and have come to the conclusion that I can comfortably cruise for long periods of time at a true 70mph on back roads. It is not necessarily very fun going in a relatively straight line on this bike, but it is comfortable enough as long as there are not a lot of other vehicles nearby.

If you're going on the freeway, however, the same 70mph becomes quite unpleasant. It's not the power that is the issue, it's the excessive wind-blast from all the other vehicles.

I recommend you test-ride one. If you're looking for a back-roads bike, I think you'll like it a lot.

I like to tell people who ask me about what I ride and why I ride a vstrom dl 650 it is the best at nothing but it is good at everything. As a daily rider or a long trip loaded or unloaded mild off road this bike has done everything that I tried. If at all possibile try to test ride one or rent one just give it a chance I would be suprised if you don't like it.
