trading my klr for wee

I posted up on advrider that I want to trade my 2007 klr650 for a v or wee strom and a guy replied back that he is willing to trade his 2004 dl650 with 46k straight up for my klr. My bike only has 3,400 miles but its less of a bike than the wee strom.

Does this sound like a decent trade?, also is 46k to many miles for the wee strom, how long do those engines generally last?

Thanks, Eric

I have an '06 KLR and its currently dead, having seized on me at 17k miles when it puked its oil on my way to work. I'm a member here to try to learn everything I can about Wees and Vees before I get one. From what I've read, many of these bikes regularly pass 100k miles. With the mileage that one has, it would mainly depend on how its been treated- has it been abused? Fluids and filters changed when they should? Other maintenance done when it should have been? When was the last time the valves were done?

If its a well cared for bike I wouldn't hesitate. I wish I was able to do an even trade! Honestly i think the other guy would have to be nuts to want a KLR over a Strom. I enjoyed riding mine, but the maintenance was a nightmare, and reliability nonexistent.

I looks like a few of us KLR owners are ready to jump ship. I've also been wondering how long the DL650 will last. I was initially nervous about the SCEM coated cylinders, yet I can't find any evidence that anyone has worn one out. These bikes seem to go until they get run over.

And they do this without putting $600 into the engine just so it will stay together!

I agree, I have yet to hear of one having a blown motor or any serious issues with them. I've always wanted a v-strom since day 1 of riding 2 years ago its just been a little out of my price range, thats the reason why i am looking to trade straight for one with higher mileage.

I have an old cheap KLR and I say its indispensable for going offroad, and does that job much better than either Strom. Mine is set up for trail riding, more so than my Vee. I got it for a disturbingly cheap price and it just keeps on ticking with little engine work and little or no mainainence. It may be the ultimate around town bike, superior to either Strom

But I need to tour sometimes, and my Vee is hard to beat for sport touring--I have it set up mostly for that, and on pavement it is vastly superior to the KLR. So I always say if you can, consider the purchase of two used bikes, a Vee and a KLR, and you will be set for nearly all motorcycling needs.

So then I bought a '77 Goldwing, and I am now scratching the 'old bike' itch. What is to become of me?

Just compare the fact that I have seen many complete Strom engines, of both sizes, with relatively low mileages for sale for WELL under $1000, usually in the $500-$600 range. Compare that to a 10-15 year old, mostly worn out KLR engine for $1200-$1600. Which one seems to be in demand? Pretty bad when the 20-year old, single cylinder, ancient design sells for twice what a modern V-twin sells for.

Don't waste anymore time comparing durability, they are both pretty bullet proof motors.

Is he leaving all the accessories on?

If yes, I'd jump on it.

By the way, I am picking up a 650 Vstrom this Saturday that will replace my trusty KLR...
