Some details - Dl1000 New, Dl1000 Used, FJR???

Hi All,

New to the site but have been gleening information for you for the last few months. I currently ride a SV1000S, love the bike but have been looking for something different because of thinking of two-up riding with my wife.

We went to a Suzuki demo ride, and tried all types of bikes that would be "suitable" for two up riding. Actually, figured that I would end up with a M109 or a C109 because I figured that she would be more comfortable on that. At the end of the day, we tried the DL1000 just on a lark, figuring she wouldn't be all that comfortable on it but by the time she got off, she was much happer then the others. It had full luggage and being wedged between me and the back box made her feel "more secure". Based on that, I ended up looking at a few bikes, mainly the V-Strom and the FJR1300.

I still haven't made up my mind 100% but at this point, we are leaning more to the V-Strom mostly because of price and her comfort on it. I have found a few good deals on New, Demo and used DLs and am trying to decide which way to go. Does anyone have some insights into any issues facing certain years of the DLs, things to look for, etc? And any thoughts or comments on the decision process would be very appreciated.

Well it depends on what you want a bike to do .

The FJR 1300 or even better the Kawasaki 1400 Concours if you are doing road and like going longer distance with two aboard and going fast . Both these bikes are excellent touring bikes that will go the distance and are sharft drive . The Vstrom on the other hand lets you doa bit of dirt far easier than these . Test them all and let your better half help you decide .

Me ,I have a wee and I am trying to get the better half to agree to a second bike a Kawasaki 1400, I liked the FJR but the kawasaki is that little bit better I think .

To be honest, I hadn't really checked the Concours out yet, might give it a shot. My problem is that I have test-riden both the DL and the FJR and my wife says she is comfortable on both. Since two up riding is new to us, I really don't KNOW what we will be using the bike for yet. If it is just short trips around Ontario (especially with how crappy most of the roads are lately), probably the DL will work out just fine (and with a difference of almost $8K OTD with the deals I am seeing that really helps.). If it ends up that she actually enjoys going for longer trips (I have travelled across Canada and the Northern US a few times by car now, it would be cool to do it on the bike) then probably the FJR or Concours does make more sense.

I think I have pretty well decided to keep the SV for the time being, it still is a blast to throw around, and it is fully paid for so it is just the cost of maintenance, license and insurance to ride.

Unfortunately, it almost looks like I really won't know WHICH bike I should get until after we get it and have it for a year or so to see what we actually use it for.

My 02 cents...

I don't think your giving enough credit to the Strom.
The DL will do everything you want it too and many tour 2 up on them without issue. The bike is easily well suited for lost distance riding.

The FJR, Connie, and ST1300 are a breed of there own really. The biggest thing that these bike have over the DL is shaft drive and 4 cylinder engines with loads of power. But they're also 10 grand more.
You've ridden both so you know what the FJR brings to the table, the other sport tourers would be similar. The passenger seat on the DL is very good and I doubt your wife would find much difference on either bike.

I would find a good used DL with some extras already added. Take the misses on a few weekend trips and see how it works out.
The 8000 dollars savings you mentioned can make for a lot of weekend trips...

I'd recommend you check on the 1000 part of the forum to see of any differences in the years. I don't believe there were any "issues", but some things were likely improved.

I can't really disagree with what you said. Okay, one more question to put to the group, what are your thoughts on extended warranty. I have had them on a few vehicles (both car and bike). Sometimes it is a blessing, other a complete waste.

I can get the 1 year warranty upgraded to 60 months, unlimited mileage for $900 and that includes parts, labour and roadside assistance.

Worth the money, or just a cash grab? Thoughts?

IMO, it's not worth it. But that's just me. Whatever your comfortable with.
Be sure to spend some time with the 1000 group. They'll have all the answers. Also, be sure to check out the classifieds. A few nicely equipped 1000's are for sale right now!!!

DL1000

My wife loves the the DL to ride on. And, I like it when I am not riding with her. I can change the bike from Touring (bigger shield, barbacks, drop the forks, add the bags) to sport (no bar backs, raise the forks, small shield, no bags) to dirt (take off the lowers, no bar backs, small shield, lower tire pressure, just the trunk) in 30 minutes. Try that with a Connie or FJR. And it does not weigh 650 lbs, generate a ton of heat, or cost $14K, although I have over $10K in mine with all the farkles. I bet I could hit $14K if my wife'd let me.

JTB why not rent a bike and try one for a weekend .
I do not know you age, size etc so it,s hard to advise you .
I would BUY second hand if you decide to change then you may not loose more than a few $100.

Look in the USA and import it, check it out a few people do it on the goldwwing,fjr, boards over the years .

I am surprise there are so many people in trouble getting out bikes less than 12 months old and I have seen concourse 14 go for about $10,500 . Yamaha have held there value well probably abit better than the Kawasaki .

If you are going to do hard packed dirt then the dl1000 is a better choice . If you are going to a lot of dirt well, get a dirt bike .

Graham;

Age 37, Weight 250lbs, Height 6'2". Not EXACTLY a small guy.

I love the idea of renting a bike for the weekend, but around here bike rental places are VERY scarse and their selection of bikes are very limited. From looking at Autotrader, Craigslist, and Kijiji there really aren't a whole ton of newer DL1000s OR FJRs on the market in Ontario, and I really don't want to go through the hassle of bringing it up from the states. Also, I am paying off my car lease in September so I am keeping most of my cash available to pay off the residual so that is why I am mostly looking at new or demo bikes so I can finance and pay it off over the next 6-8 months.

We are doing another test ride on the DL today and I will see what the better half says after that. If she thinks she will be comfortable on it, we will probably grab the DL demo, otherwise probably be doing the paperwork on the FJR on Tuesday after the long weekend.

Well, the decision has been made...

We took the DL for a long run today and when we got back, the better half said that she was MUCH more comfortable on the FJR soooo that is the direction we will end up going.

Thanks everyone for your assistance, advice, etc. The odds are good that if I see a great deal on a used DL down the road, I will grab it... But it looks like it will only be me riding on it most of the time.
