Some questions about prices for a V-Strom

Background, I'm 6' 280ish pounds, for the last 3 years I've been riding a 1992 Suzuki Intruder 800. Big guy, little bike, I need and upgrade and I want comfort over any kind of looks.

Friday I took a M50 for a test ride, wide seat was much better for my wide butt, but I felt stretched for the handlebars. Started looking at the "standard" bikes. Went to a dealer who sat me on a VStrom 650, I really really liked it. I'm pretty sold that this is what I want my next bike to be.

However, this was a 2008 and they were asking 6200 for it. I checked around a bit, blue book is 5280 on this thing. It did only have 800 miles, but a used bike is a used bike. Obviously MSRP on this thing was only 6699. I went back and questioned it, and they said because they increased the price on the 2009 to 7499, that is why they priced that one that way. That doesn't fly for me. They are confident they will sell it for 6k, maybe so, but not to me.

What are good prices for used V-Stroms? They don't seem to be hugely popular here in NE Ohio, what is the best outlet to find used ones? What about what I could expect to find a new one for at a dealer? I've seen an internet listing a 2009 for 6999. I need to verify, but I was at another dealer that had a 2009 that I think he said was 6899, not sure if that included prep or not, but 6000 for a used bike or 900 more for a brand new, 12 month warranty, I just don't get that. The used one did have a gel seat and center stand, but I had a salesman tell me that matters for private sellers, but a dealer doesn't factor in addons to their trades/used bikes. I don't have much of a reason to not believe him as he didn't have any used V-stroms to sell me and he wasn't even trying to push me into a new one or other bike, but who knows? I guess they are called Stealers for a reason.

Beyond the pricing and where to find questions, for a guy my size this should be the bike that I don't dread riding the highway because I know my back is going to hurt from the concentrated vibration, or never trying to take a highway trip because I know I can't take more than about a hour at highway speeds on my VS800. I'm mainly going to be using it as a daily commuter in the spring/summer/late fall for about a 40-50 minute one way drive, all local roads. Not much use for going off road, but not being scare witless on gravel drives and parking lots would be nice.

Thanks for any feedback.

I am a new owner as of today.
Mine was $6958 OTD for an Orange 650 Strom just this morning, NW Indiana and we have 7% tax.
Im 6'4, 300lbs.
I put on around 100 of the break in miles this evening and I got off about every 25 to look it over. Vibration of the bike was minimal, and compared to my KLR 650 non-existant.

Too soon to tell, but I think it is great so far.

Sounds like "Greedy Dealer Syndrome". I found a lot of that when I was looking for a ATV. I heard the same B/S about a Suzuki Eiger (used) and went to Cycletrader.com and found a new one with a free Warn winch---CHEAPER!!!!! Also had the same problems finding my DL 1,000, I heard they aren't making them yet, they have no stock, we can't get one? Called one local dealer up every day for 5 days to push him to find me one, he never did! Almost gave up, then called another dealer who got me a 08 (cheaper) in the color I wanted, and had it in two days! The FACT is: the dealer whom you are talking to took the bike in on trade, gave the seller probably less than book, far less than book on a newer model, and is hurting for business. He's trying to make up for low sells buy raising prices. I'd tell him to shove it! I'm a little lighter than you, and the 1,000 may be a better choice, if you ride two-up it's a lot better. I commute on mine and ride interstates, cruises like a dream, no cross-wind blowing me around, overall very happy. Wee's go for around 5 grand used around here, but whatever you decide-they are both great bikes! Cheers--BB
