Thinking about buying a 650 Vstrom

I'm a returning rider; I rode in the 70's and 80's and quit. I started riding again a little over a year ago on a Honda CB500x. While I like that bike a lot, I'd like a bit more power, and I think something in a 650 to 750 cc range would be a good move. I'm on this forum to look around, learn about the Vstrom and to ask questions.

Welcome!

You came to the right place.

Depending on what your budget is, there are many good used DL650 out there and if you are patient and buy in the off season there is little risk. If you don't like the bike (too tall, too slow, too … whatever) just sell it again with limited loss.

You will get better comments if you specify in more detail what kind of riding you intend to use the bike for.

Welcome to the forum, etex.

As Blaustrom said you are in the right place. Ask away.

I love my '06 Wee (DL650) and it has taken me all over the place.

I do mainly street riding, and mainly on local highways; usually two lane farm to market highways. I just like everything about maneuvering a bike while looking at the rural scenery. I'm retired, so I can ride when I want to, which is quite often - in the past 12 months, I've ridden almost 16,000 miles usually on 100 to 200 mile day trips. I am occasionally on gravel/dirt roads, but not much.

What I like about my CB500x is its upright seating position and maneuverability and handling. While I am satisfied with the bike, I'd like a bit more power for passing and a more forward foot peg location. I've put a 22 inch Madstad windshield on my bike, and find that it gives my head and most of my torso a still bubble of air. I've put Michelin Road 5 tires on, which I think are nicely secure when cornering.

It seems like a 650 Strom would work out well for me. Comments?

Haven't ridden the 500, but I'm not sure you'll notice that much of a difference with a 650 Vstrom. Looks like a 20% bump in HP, which isn't nothing, but probably not enough to set your world on fire. Have you considered keeping the 500 for shorter runs and getting something liter-ish for longer hauls? Not that I'd ever talk anyone out of getting a Wee, but I see it as a terrific compromise bike. If you can get 2 bikes instead...why not? (Besides $$$, of course)

It seems that way. The only way to find out is ride one for some miles.

What's your size/ inseam? I think the WEE height is a little more than the CB500x.

What's your budget?

With respect to horsepower: according to a published non-Honda report, the CB500x has 47 HP. According to a non-Suzuki published report, the 2019 V-Strom 650 has 69 HP, which is 46% greater than the Honda 500x. I'd like that, but not always does the reality equal the published spec. Could someone who ridden the CB500x and a V-strom 650 comment on the perceived difference in power?

With regard to seat height, the Motorcycle Ergonomics report says the CB500x is 32.2, and the V-Strom (2015) is 32.3. A Suzuki spec listing for 2019 says the seat height of a 650 is 33.1. I put an aftermarket seat on the CB, which raised it up 1.5 inches over OEM, so it seems like the seat height would not be an issue for me. However, I obviously need to sit on one to at least test that out.

With regard to budget: I can probably get what I want, but what I want usually includes not spending more than I need to. IE, it depends.

Hi and Welcome,

This is a good place to come and hang out and learn about the Stroms. Generally good discussions, comments and advice, and many here own other bikes, either in addition to or instead of a VS. (just don't mention BMW's.... : )

I had a 2017 CB500F (not the X) and for me, there is a notable difference between the two bikes, especially on the highway. The Strom 650 is what I hoped the CB500 would be. Better stability, more muscular and IMHO a more relaxed ride. Much better gearbox, also,. The CB500 is lighter, and lower and gets much better fuel economy, esp in the city certainly. I'm 6' with a 32" inseam, just in case you're considering how things might fit your frame. From your description, I think the V650 is a logical contender if you feel a move 'up' is in the cards.

@Macdoc has a CB500X and I think he went the other way; Strom > CB500X. His take on the honda is different than mine, so another worthwhile opinion to consider if the Strom is the change you are thinking of.

If you do try a Strom 650, let us know what you think.

I'm having an adventure- so, its an adventure bike.
I'm retiring so I can ride full time.

I've had 3 Vstrom 650s and one CB500x. If physically fit the Vstrom you'll enjoy the extra power. My inseam is 30" and the Vstrom feels top heavy....the CB500x feels light.

I went cross country this year on the CB500x and similar trip with my son ( on his own bike ) on a 2010 Vstrom 650.

The CB was the more pleasurable ride...the biggest surprise of all was the stability at speed ,,,better than the Vstrom 650s but much might be attributed to the wings on the Madstad set up on the Honda.
It's the lower weight that attracted and while the CBF1000 was a thrill ....it did not like passing gas stations.

The Vstrom 650 is very lively without luggage or side cases.... it's a great motor and rumours are it's even better in the last few years. If you fit the Vstrom ....it will give you the extra power.
