Price variation question

While researching for my eventual v strom 650 purchase I have come across an interesting find, and I'm surious if there is something I am missing as to a reason. I have found a fair number of new 2017 V Strom 650's prices between $5k-$5,900. NEW. I understand that they are a model year old. Is there a different model I'm not aware of? Do people simply not purchase white bikes? The price discrepancy appears so drastic. Thoughts on this?
Thanks again,
Jon

Showroom queens, dead stock, are every retailer's nightmare.

There are only a few (very few) old style shops that refuse to reduce prices on dated stock, and so they sit there gathering dust. Why would people spend the same money to get last years graphics, and perhaps miss out on a few tweaks that may have been incorporated into this year's version?

The 2017 was a huge upgrade model year and the 2018 has seen very little changes - making old stock a windfall for dollar conscious purchasers.

I understand Brockie. Thanks. I just felt that discounting from $9k to $5k was extreme. Something to consider.

There are many factors, some we can only guess at, which influence a retailers choice to discount one or other of his inventory. I was a retailer for 22 years. Every individual retailer will have a different situation (financial and inventory wise) and different motives for being prepared to do a deal.

Dealers have to pay taxes on stock even if it's old. Best to make a few bucks than loose to the tax man.

Some color models didn't sell well. Local Big box had SV650's on the cheap because they were the copper/orange color and seemed unattractive at the time.
They offered the fairing lowers as well as a price drop to get rid of them.
Great bikes just hideous looking to the buying public.

A lot of dealers will steeply discount bikes at end of season rather than carry them over the winter. Also pays to shop around for the best deal. I priced a left over 1000SE last year and there was $3500 difference between high and low prices for the exact same bike! One dealer even refused to recognize the Suzuki factory discount available at the time.
