new here, looking at a 650, known issues?

I went on my first ADV ride the other day and rode a friend's VStrom 1000 and another buddy's Africa Twin. I'm hooked and will try to trade one of my street bikes for a VStrom 650 or 1000 if I can find the right deal. Since I'm brand new to this bike family and I'll likely be looking for a second gen bike, I wanted to check in about known issues that I should be aware of when I'm shopping. Engine mods everyone does, transmission parts, steering bearings, suspension weaknesses, electronic failures that everyone has and knows how to fix, etc.

Couple pics from the day.

Welcome to the forum, I highly recommend you search/browse the forum sections along with the information you will be receiving from members. Not many issues with the 650's, the stator issue was a SUZUKI issue, and beyond installing some headlight relays, there is literally nothing else to ever worry about on any 650 model year. I recommend staying away from the first gen 1000's 02-12 as good as they are, some tweaking and modifying is needed by likely 95% of owners, where the 650's are gas up and ride. I am going to move this topic out of this area, not sure if you are looking at new Stroms and or what model? The latest models are better than ever, in particular the 1000........

Thanks Brian, not looking for brand new. Rode my buddy's '14 1000 and loved it but with what I have in trade it's likely I'll be headed for a second gen 650. Sat on both size Stroms and a Versys and a couple Multis at the dealer near our place and liked the space on them all for 2 up riding. Glad to hear nothing major to worry about on the 650s. I'll be lurking around... Just a totally different style of riding from what I'm used to. I mostly ride sport bike stuff on the street and have a decent track bike. Getting shown up on an ADV ride by a man 100lbs bigger and 30 years older was a hell of a lot of fun! Need more practice but I can tell it's going to be great.
Spec and srpkcop like this.

The "Wee" is better! (imho)

Jake, I'm just jumping back to the forum and just purchased a used Wee, 2012 Adventure with less than 3,000 miles for a bit under 6k. I don't think you can go wrong with a v-strom. The only thing the Strom can do better than the Wee is travel faster over 100 mph. This is just my opinion, don't mean to sound like a know it all, but it sounds like you have plenty of "go-fast" bikes in your stable, so you really don't need that. There are guys in this forum that have put knobbies on a Wee and gone places I would dare with a dirt bike. (Just for the record, I purchased my strom at National Powersports, they are pretty good, I have purchased three or four bikes from them). Just for the record this bike is a supplement to my 2008 Wee. Can't get too much of a good thing. See you around.

Nothing particular to say about the 650's, they are tanks and you can get them in Ohio for sub $4k all day. My 650 was my first ADV bike and it has been perfect. Lots of accessories out there for reasonable prices for them too. As Big B said, the first gen 1000's leave a bit to be desired, so I personally would stick with a 650 if you are looking at older bikes.

I'm actually getting ready to list my 650 locally, but I go back and forth because it has been such a great bike. I don't want to regret selling it down the road for something "newer".
