Good Buy?

Looking for some opinions on a few Craigslist finds. I want to get a Vstrom 650 and have found two for around 2500. One is 2004 with 24k miles. Or should I go with a newer model that is a 2011 with 36k that they want 5500 for? Opinions??

Hard to say without the details... I'd lean toward the 2011 for the ABS but $5500 is far too high. He'll be lucky to get $4K as V-Stroms don't hold their value very well. For what he's asking you could get a gen2 bike with lower miles if you are patient but Spring is almost here and prices will be rising (but so will the supply which is good). I'd wait on the 2011 seller to come to his senses and start lowering his price.

It was 4-5 years ago but when I was shopping for my 2007 bike with ABS on CL -- it started at $3600 and I ended up buying it for $1500 + $20 to deliver and a ride home. But it was a fixer upper with 80K miles on it.

The 650 had many upgrades in 2012, so IMHO it would be a plus to get a newer one, although many do just fine on the earlier models. I sold a 2013 this past summer for $5k. I think around 5K miles, lots of good farkles (including new fork springs), and absolutely like-new condition. You don't say where you are and we have no details, but I think that 2011 is WAY overpriced, maybe by around $2K.

2004 for around $1700-$2000 would be good price. 2011 is waaay (overpriced. BTW there is 2016 Wee2 just posted) in For Sale section for $5900 (like new).

If that 2011 for $5500 was in your budget, this one has to be far better value.

don't you see it? 2011 with over 30000miles for $5500 vs 2016 with just over 3000 miles for $5900. And you are talking about better value?

I didn't make myself clear, when I wrote "this one" , I was referring to the 2016. Sorry for the confusion.
