I recently sold my 2005 Wee (bought new) and upgraded to the new 2017 DL 650. It was well worth it. I do not have a 1000 VStrom but I do have a Triumph Tiger 1050 so I can compare the Wee to a liter sized bike. All I can say is this: My 650 gets a lot more use than the larger displacement bike. Why? Just more fun and easier to ride. But, it depends on what your expectations are. I will say the new model Wee is an improvement of the former model. More power, better handling, nicer contolls, even sounds better. I like my new Wee so much I am putting my 1050 Tiger up for sale. The Wee does all I could ask of it. Ooh, and much of my riding with two up as my wife loves bikes.
The Wee outsold the 1000 DL by a long shot every since it came out. But, everyone is different so I can't say buy one over the other. I can say for a fact that the 2017 Wee was a great move forward and I have no regrets parting with my nice trouble free '05 model to upgrade to the new one.
