motorcycle/ATV jacks (lifts)

1) Do most v-strom owners just use a center stand to do basic maintenance including tires, chains, sprockets, etc.
2)Or is it better to buy a bike with a skid plate that will work with like a Craftsmen bike/ATV lift and strap it down to the lift with ratchet straps?
I thought I had read someplace that with a nicely-shaped skid plate (Pat Walsh, perhaps?) that is a lot easier to lift the bike up in the air, then tie it down to the lift itself. I have seen the pic of that guy who made the pipe rack that attaches to the garage wall, then crosses overhead, then comes down the other side and ends in a tee.
Sears has got a sale on motorcycle lifts, so I thought i would grab one if good for bike maintenance. I had a cheap Harbor freight that lasted for 2 years or so, worked well on my harley, but would not work on my bmw R1100RT. Thanks for any advice, appreciate it.

I have a mc/atv lift jack that works great for my dirt bikes, but I don't use it for my V-Strom. I don't have a skid plate, but even if I did, I would probably still do most maintenance using the center stand.

Unless you have other bikes that you can use the the lift for, you might want spend the money on a center stand.

I have or had all of the above. ATV Jack, Pat Walsh bars and plate and center stand. Center stand is the clear winner. Just easier to use. Less space, less effort and better access.

I was just telling my wife that I need to get one of these. I've got a back problem and doing motorcycle maintenance on the garage floor is a killer! I gotta get my work up at standing level. Where did you get yours and how much?

Thanks HH. It's snowing here today so I might have to drive to Harbor today to see what they have.

Thanks guys. Good to know that I only need a center stand then. Those big table motorcycle lifts are very nice.
