DL650 in LA area?

Hi -
This is a great group! I've really gotten a lot out of reading the posts.

I'm a newbie, got my M1 in Dec., took the safety course & loved it. I'm 5'10", 155 lbs, 33-1/2" inseam. I've rented a Honda 250 and a 750 Shadow. My husband has ridden for 35 yrs (has a BMW F800ST) & is helping me through my newbie stage. I also road bike. If you ride Angeles Crest, I'm one of the cyclists you pass riding up the mountain.

I liked the weight of the 250 but I was too cramped, plus on a 100 mile ride it's not too comfortable. The 750 is more comfortable for a long ride but "interesting" figuring how to walk it thru parking lots, but I can learn that. I'm really interested in trying a V-Strom 650, but I can't find anyplace to rent one in LA area. The closest I found is in San Francisco. Plus the couple of dealers I've been to say that the Japanese mfgrs don't allow test rides. How do they sell bikes if you can't test ride them?

I think I would really like the DL 650 w/ABS but don't want to buy one without riding it. I think it would fit me better than a cruiser. It's a little bigger than I "should" get for my 1st bike, but with my height I think I'd be more comfortable, plus I'm relatively strong so can hopefully handle the extra weight. I know I'll have to spend time on quiet streets & parking lots getting used to it and it's higher center of gravity.

Does anyone have any leads where I can rent a DL650 in the LA area, and how to get a dealer to let me test ride one? My husband would be with me, if that helps.

I made a few calls in the Riverside area, no dealer around here would let you ride before buying. When I bought mine the service guy told me the owner won't even let him ride one until the customers $$$ is in the bank
