New to me V-Strom 650

Hi all,

New to this forum. I am looking for a new to me 650 model. Would like to know the following to help with my purchase.

1) Any particular model years with big issues i.e. Stator problems etc.?
2) Are there big improvements in performance, reliability or comfort with the 2012+ models vs 2011- models? I read in one review that 2011- models were prone to corrosion issues, not sure how significant that is.
3) Any other tips, suggestions or comments that would be helpful.

From what I can see in my area looks like a 2011 model with abs in the $4K range is what I am looking at. There seems to be a big cost jump to 2012+ models, so I am really curious to know if there is any real benefit to 2012+ of if is just the new looks and some minor engine performance improvement.

I have a '07A and a '15XT

1-Stators are hit and miss & there is a stator recall on the newer models:
https://www.stromtrooper.com/dl650a-2...em-recall.html

2-Kinda..... 2012^ slight changes in suspension(but if you are over 200lbs a suspension re-work has a dramatic effect) and fuel delivery(less throttle snatch, overall smoother response). 2007-11 saw some changes, most significant from 2 to 4 spark plugs and ABS an option. A buddy has an '05 and I really can't tell much difference in performance from my '07.

3-pre 2012 bikes are selling at bargain prices(my '07A 75K miles & farkled here is worth about $2,500) They are solid machines that are built like a tank.

Maybe it's cosmetic, but I really love my 2015. 2012^ can be had for well under $5 grand if you search hard enough and are willing to fly and ride. I did exactly that for my '15 @ $6,300. With the new look of the 2017's hitting the showrooms soon, the used 12's-16's will drop even further in price.

The pre 2012 is not nice to look at in my opinion, that is why I bought my 2012!

Nice, guys. I'm in a similar boat, OP. Looking for a quality used 650. It seems there are more deals around on 1000s. Not sure why. There aren't a ton in the LA market, and it seems better deals can be had elsewhere. I have reason enough to head up near Detroit or Buffalo, or Colorado. More to come...

There's a guy in Nashville on here with a nicely farkled 2015 650xt for $4500. For that kind of a deal you could have it shipped. It has been dealer serviced.
