Question What's it worth? 2004 DL1000 Vee

I know less than dirt about V-Stroms and I looked at one today as a "project bike" that I may pick up for a second bike. I own a 2012 Goldwing that is my daily driver and commuter toy. I have an opportunity to pick up a 2004 DL1000 with about 60k on it. Lots of extras but has a coolant leak issue that had not been diagnosed and I would be basically buying the bike "for parts" though I have the intention of fixing it to ride as an alternate. Have looked at the KBB's for that year bike in working condition. This one isn't per se'. It will run but was shut down due to a big coolant leak that showed up out of the blue 1/2 a mile from his house and the owner thought might be head gasket but didn't confirm. The oil in the window looks fine, not milky or having strata showing coolant. He said make an offer and I want it to be fair but have ZERO idea what is fair. What is a clean parts bike going for? Ideas? I could probably get it for a song and a dance but I don't sing or dance and he is a friend and fellow rider so I want it to be legit.

Mine had a bit of coolant leak, it was a hose clamp loose. Might be a simple fix.
If the guy is a friend, figuring out a solution should be an amicable issue.
If it's really an expensive repair, get a lower price.

Wow that is a tough one. You don't know if the engine over heated or not. A simple coolant leak is no problem as notacop said. A coolant leak that caused the engine to quit running is BIG issue.

Will the bike start and run?

If not, it may have/probably seized. If you think it may have seized I would price used replacement engines and go from there, but understand that replacing an engine is a LOT of work. Used DL1000s from that period are not that expensive ready to ride. They can last forever though so one with more miles priced right might be a better way to go. But don;t overlook the DL650s. They were better sorted out than the Gen 1 DL1000s and just plain excellent motorcycles.

I got my 05 1000 with 25000 miles for $2000 October 2015. It was a bit of a fixer upper, had sit for a year or two, had to bring a battery with me to test drive, started right up but leaked and smoked a little, rode it around for a while and started to clear up.

I would try to diagnose the source of the leak. Most likely a simple fix, hose clamp somewhere. Then the general condition and the "extras" determine value. I would think somewhere between 1 and 2k.

I would start it up, warm it a little by driving around the block and then let it idle and warm up completely and watch if and if so from where the coolant comes.

If it's a serious problem, like head gasket, I would not pay much because you may need to change the engine which will cost you 500 - 1000 plus the labor to do it. It might be better to part the bike out and sell the farkles, wheels etc.

$1,000 would be a good price with an undiagnosed problem. Home mechanics will change it out for another engine for you for a few hundred $$. Whatever the leak in the bike, if it's leaking externally, then it can likely be fixed cheaply. Head gasket would be a few hundred and comes with a valve adjustment for a few $ more. this is also an opportunity to change to SV camshafts if the heads need to come off. (They don't have to come off to change but if they're off, it's easier for the installation) My point is that even if you need a fairly serious fix, then you can take advantage of the situation too.

Sounds good. I was toying with that kind of price point. Will be chatting with the guy in the next week or two. I also find it interesting that you are in Bremerton. I am as well. I ride the Kingston boat to work every day.

How about $500. That is what it cost me. Upgraded pipes, paniers, Givi trunk, heated grips... and comes with a coolant leak. No extra charge for the coolant leak of course I put a battery in it and it fires immediately. The coolant leak is at the port on the head. Got a post up on that looking for some feedback. Figured I'd let ya'll know how it all turned out.
