How many miles is too many?

Howdy, gang.

My goal is to score a tour-ready 650 (w/ hard side cases) for $2K or under, which means I'm looking in the high-mileage '04/'05 neighborhood. I have one picked out that I may bring home Sunday, weather permitting.

Here's my question. What's the mileage ceiling for one that's well cared for? Can a well-maintained one reach 100K miles easily?

Any common flaws that are specific to this model that I should look for?

Thanks!! Looking forward to joining this community.

Here's the '04 I'm looking at. 75K miles on the clock.

I have an '06 with 83,000 miles on it. Lately I've been riding 1600 miles per month and will have 100k on it next year. It takes hardly any maintenance.

You might have difficulty finding one that's truly tour ready for less than $2000. Most sellers will be removing luggage and accessories to sell separately.

Some things to look out for at that mileage are worn out rear suspension and oil consumption. They all use oil to some extent at highway speeds, but my friend's '07 with over 90k uses a lot and needs top end work. Also check the cush drive rubber, sprocket carrier and wheel bearings for play.

Thanks. The one pictured above has been offered to me in my price range. It also includes (not pictured) a Givi rear rack that allows one of the side cases to serve as a top case.

Seller says...

"I have just gone through the bike, It has newer tires, battery, chain, sprockets, fork seals and oil, brakes, etc. I have just serviced the bike with fresh oil and filter, flushed and refilled the cooling system. New external fuel filter. The valves were just checked and were all in spec. while the bike was apart, I added new cam chains and tensioners as a preventative measure."

There are a number of six figure mileage 650s out there, many more than bikes that were disposed of as worn out by then. People get tired of them before breaking them.
Big B likes this.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

I can easily believe this.

I sold my great-running and low-mileage (~32K miles, I think) '07 Wee largely because I wanted (not needed) a "new design", '12+ Wee.

Now that I have a '12 Wee I'm starting to look at the '17, even though my '12 Wee has less than 35K miles with a fresh valve inspect / check.

2007 Wee. Blue. Bought at 5K miles. Sold at 32K+ miles. Gone but not forgotten.

2012 Wee2 Adventure. Black. Bought at 26K miles. Now 44K+. Love it!

Rode the bike home Saturday. Very please. A lot of bike for $2000. Sale included a rear mount for the Givi monokey cases that wasn't pictured. Heated grips too.

I have a '05 wee-Strom (same beautiful blue!) that I bought four years ago with 36000 kms on the clock. Just coming up for 100,000 now. Only issues I have had were in the last few months:
- Starter motor needed an overhaul
- Fuel pump sometimes needs a second "kick" to spin up and pressurize the system (ignition off and on again), but I'm replacing that.

Love the bike! Enjoy yours.

My 2006 DL650 was parked at 202,000+km/125,000+mIles. I parked it since liked what suzuki did to the 2012 DL650. It had sat for about years and has been resuscitated as a project bike by one of my tech friends.

@rcacs had around 160,000 miles plus last I heard.

100,000 miles is nothing. Pretty much just change the oil and ride.

..Tom

2006 DL650: 202,000 km 125,500 miles, Sold
2012 DL650 139,500+ km, 86,700+ miles. Sold
2015 DL1000 New July 2015 193,000+ km, 120,000 miles.

This can help preventing from cars pulling out in front of you (SMIDSY)
