Question '04 for $1000 but uses oil

So here's the deal -

I want to do a bit of light off road riding - primarily gravel and hard packed dirt - places where I do not want to take my 600lb, full fairing, Norge - like the last 7 miles to Bodie Ghost Town, parts of Death Valley, Valley of the Gods and Moki Dougway in Utah. This bike will take the place of the Shadow as a loaner bike as well. The DL650 sounds like a good fit for my needs.

I have been offered an '04 with roughly 100k miles that burns oil at the rate of about a quart every 600 miles. To me that seems like a lot as none of my other bikes use any oil between changes.

Would you pass on this, is this something of a know issue with an older 650, or is it probably a simple fix the the current owner has just never taken the time to address?

Thanks,

jdg

Are you mechanical enough to rebuild the engine?

Rat bike?
If it's cheap, and as Cyclopathic said can you rebuild, worth it for a fun bike. Maybe a cheap rebuild for a lot of use.
The parts would be worth the purchase price.
I really hate to see good bikes go to waste though.

Just as a point of reference used Wee with 20-30k can be found at 3k, new 2013-2015 at 6k+tax,etc, new 2015 ADV for ~8k.

KLR 650 could be had for 2k so DR650 and those much more suitable for off-road than Wee.

I agree with cyclopathic, since you already have a road bike, I'd go with a better off-road bike like a KLR650, DR650, or DRZ400. All can be found for around $2k - KLR is the best of the 3 on-road, DRZ best off-road, DR between the two.

You could just get the 1000 and then put in grocery store oil at a couple bucks a quart and never do oil changes. Might be a cheap way out.
Or check with West Coast GP cycles in Monrovia and see what a refresh would cost. They specialize in SV's for track. (626) 239-0239

Yeah, I am but really don't want to add another project at this point as we're about to rebuild the wife's '57 Chevy. I'd rather put the energy and money into that.

Hadn't thought about them. Others in my group know Andy well. I'll give them a shout.

Hmmm, things to consider.

The other big issue is this will replace the Shadow as the bike I loan out to people (singles and couples) who come in from other countries for perhaps their once in a lifetime ride in the US, so it also needs to fulfill a two - up adventure touring role. I think the DL would do that - the others?
