Help deciding on a DL1000A vs DL650

Hey guys, im about to pull the trigger on a 2014 DL1000A and the dealer quoted me $11k OTD, is that a little high for a NEW 2014?

My background is mostly sport bikes, CBR600RR, GXSR6 and my last bike was a SV650S.

I want more of a sport standard and i test rode the 1000 and the 650 today. I liked the 1000 more as I highway ride 30 miles each way to work.

Should i try to bargain them down on the price?

Can't tell you anything about the price. Haven't been shopping for a bike, plus I don't know where you are.

It sounds like you are sticking to pavement. Your list of rides are all better handling bikes on pavement, not that the DL's don't handle but they have more suspension, so they sit higher and the weight is higher on them. For me, I like the upright ride, not wanting to lean over the tank anymore. The beauty of my storm is I can take it off road. Granted I don't take it full dirt riding, just to big and heavy for me but if I run across that dirt road leading off somewhere?

I ride a 650 and it does everything I want it to do. Always riding single, two up? I understand the 1Ks have more low end pulling and just more power but the 650's get better mileage as well as cheaper priced. As far as a 60 mile commute? Either bike will be fine. I ride my Wee on 500 miles days sometimes.

So you rode both and you have a feel for them. What do you think of them and what kind of riding will you be doing?

Mostly single, but my gf will be on my back for some short haul rides around Florida.

I like the low end power of the 1000, but Im not sure its $3000 better than the 650 in all honesty. I honestly doubt I'll be touching dirt with this bike, it just doesn't strike me as a dirt bike and Im not going to drop a $9k bike in the mud/water.

If you are only going to ride on pavement? What is it about the Storms are you liking?

There are plenty of street bikes to choose from that may or may not be cheaper. Better handling because it is engineered for pavement. Easier to ride in traffic.

Of course the big bore bikes will pull better but do you need it? I learned on a 175 two stroke, it had no torque, had to wind it up and keep it wound. The Wee's are easy to ride!

I like the styling/upright ride position of the strom, its in the same vein of the sv but with a little more comfort.
So maybe I need to look at the 650 again vs the 1000.

On a strictly financial basis, it may be hard to justify a new V2 over a Wee. I went with the '14 V2 because that's what I wanted and could afford it. I get a kick of the power and low end torque - it just puts a smile on my face and that made it worth it to me.
$11k OTD for a '14 V2 now sounds a little high, but it really depends on the taxs/license and market where you are. I'm in California and paid $12.3 k OTD with 7.5% sales tax, living in a rural area without a lot of competing dealers within a reasonable distance. But that was in Jan of 2015.
Good luck!

Seems to me like you already decided on 1000...May I ask how havy you are? I have started on 1000 few years ago. Had 2 of them. Then rode my buddy's 650. Next day I was looking for one and week or 2 later got one. Since that time I've had 5 DL650 and now on Wee2 for last few months. Never looked back. In my case I don't need extra power. I don't want to spend extra money on premium gas and more on insurance. And now - it is not worth $3000 or so more then 650.

With the V2 you are getting more power but dont forget, you also get way better brakes and suspension as well as traction control for your $3000.
I asked myself the same question and bought the V2.It also seemed to "feel" a little bigger to me when I sat on it.A little closer to my first gen Stroms .
For the first gen bikes I actually preferred the 650 though

I'm going back tomorrow to look at them both again. I'm leaning towards the 650 now, but what can I expect for OTD pricing?

They have it listed at $5999 and before had it at $7850 OTD. Do you think I could get the 650 down to $7000?
